  • Question : Sealent on timing chain cover bolts??

    I've ripped apart my share of engines but, putting them together I'm new at. So I took apart my 3100 that I broke and some water/antifreeze came out when I took the timing chain cover bolts out. I'm putting together a 3400 and my question is do I have to put sealant on any of the timing chain cover bolts, if so all of them or just certain ones?


    Also, while I'm asking questions I have another question. Can I put the Melling high volume oil pump that I had in the 96 3100 into the 03 3400 I'm putting together? Also, the pick up tube had to be welded on the pump so compared to the factory pump from the 3400 it's about an 1/8" higher up away from the oil pan. That is the main reason I think I shouldn't use it. Correct me if I'm wrong, should I put the high volume pump in?

    the HV pump is a baaaaad idea.. you don't need the extra volume and it can drain the pan and run dry before the oil drains back from the top end.

    the stock pump is fine.


    I always put some kind of sealant on the bolts.. i used loctite red on everything in the current engine and have no leaks.

      The large bolts near the water outlets will require thread sealant like Teflon tape or liquid thread sealant. The rest of the smaller bolts do not need anything. Use a flashlight to see if the hole is open or blind. If it is open it needs sealer.

          Damn I JUST replaced my timing cover gasket and didnt seal any bolts! I didnt because the factory ones didnt have any sealant..

            I blow into the bolt hole and see if there is a bottom in there or not. The ones that let air through, I just put a bit of silicone/RTV on them, never had a problem.

              I use liquid teflon, just dip the bolt into the bottle a little. I have forgotten to apply some before, didn't have a leak on that bolt.
              Lifting my front wheels, one jack at a time.

                  Loctite on all of mine... I believe that is what the GM manual calls for.

                    I used silicone on mine. So far so good.

                      Not all Loctite is a sealer, though

                      Make sure it's a thread sealer/locker. All the motors I took apart have that white stuff on them, looks like its thread tape, but is probably a liquid.
