Well it's been a long and arduous journey, but today I started my 2001 Olds Silhouette for the first time in six months. I did a complete upper engine overhaul from the heads up. New head gaskets, LIM gasket, UIM gasket, new UIM (broke the old one torquing it down) along with new EGR & pipe (New intake is from a 9
. I also changed the water pump, power steering pump (broke the plastic reservoir removing the hose), belt tensioner, belt, spark plugs, TStat & temp sensor.
I was going to change the 02 sensors, but I ended up not changing them. I had the heads cleaned, compression checked & milled. The new intake I got out of a local u pull it along with the EGR valve. (should only lose 5 hp with the older intake, I don't care it's a minivan for god's sake)
After much consulting on this forum and on automotive forums.com I was able to do all this for about $700 vs. the $3.8K I was quoted at the shop.
I switched from dex-cool to regular prestone in '04 when I bought this vehicle in large part to posts on the forums. My cooling system was clean, but there was some peanut butter looking oil in the engine. I'm going to run with clean oil for a bit with marvin's mystery oil and make regular oil changes till I'm satisfied its good.
If you do the LIM change go for the Fel-Pro gasket set. They are far superior to the cheap plastic OEM crap.
I didn't change the timing chain since engine is running smoothly before I tore into it. I also have a bad fuel sending unit. I'm saving some money to have someone do these two jobs later. Just happy to have it running again for now.
