  • 3100 Clack

    Hello everyone,

I have a new Jasper reman installed and probably have around 5,000 miles on it.

I gave it a nice break-in, everything was great, gave it some new 10W-30 dino after 500 miles, everything was great until 2,500 later when I changed the oil again to 5W dino (Valvoline).

Shortly after, I noticed an intermittent clack coming from what sounded to be the bottom end only after the engine is warm. It's silent when cold. After it starts to warm up when idling (it'll take awhile) or if it starts to warm up while I drive, it clacks. It's loud enough to hear inside the car when sitting at a light with the windows up and radio / climate control off. After awhile it's not too noticeable but it is audible outside the car when you're at a drive through or parked between cars.

After about 1,500 on the new 5W, it seemed to have gone away at warm idle (it would still be apparent during a warm up period). I thought everything was good, maybe it was just more shit breaking in, who knows...I thought the dirtier and thinner the oil, the worse the noise would be, but whatever. 1,000 miles later, I changed it again, 5W Mobil). The noise is back. Not as severe, but it's there during warm idle, nothing when cold.

The noise sounds 1/2 crank speed, I'm just guessing, it occurs roughly 300/min but that could be an entirely moot point depending on it really is, that was just an observation. With the hood up, it doesn't sound like it's coming from the valve covers at all. Sounds best underneath closer to the timing chain end.

This noise doesn't really follow engine speed and goes away under any type of load. On my other two 3100s, that clack would show up between 1500-2000RPM and stay in that range. Sometimes when the car is warm I hear a funny grinding noise which changes whether it's in gear or out which I just blame on the new TC.

The noise isn't deep enough to sound like a main or anything. It's a noise I hear on a lot of 3100 that happens when warming up or start up after it sits for awhile, but mine is quiet cold, makes the noise after it sits after warming up and is there when warm idle.

No idea what my oil pressure is. All I have are a few socket wrenches.

I bitched to Jasper about it already but they'll only cover $50/hr R&R for my shop to diagnose and won't send a field rep out either. I have 3yr/100K for the warranty; is this anything to worry about now or just drive it for another year and see how it's going, etc?

    Thanks guys.
