  • How to get stored codes off OBD1 95 firebird

So about a month ago I pulled my 95 v6 firebird out of hibernation. It was stored for about a year and a half with fuel stabilizer in the tank. I had to replace the thermostat because it was stuck open, engine oil, oil filter, flashed the coolant, and fired her right up. The car ran like a champ and gave me good fuel economy. However, recently the car has developed an occasional miss, along with the SES light coming on. The car has had new O2 sensors put in and new plugs and wires withing the last 12K miles all connections are good. It also seems not to want to keep running when I started hot. I will start it, and it will die right away. If I put my foot on the gas, it will start and keep running and will have no problems after that. The car starts perfectly fine when cold.
My question is, can I use the paper clip trick that can be used on third gens, to get the codes that are stored on the computer? Once I get the codes I can go from there to try and diagnose the problem.
    Thank,
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, the "paper-clip" trick was removed by GM when the PCMs went to flash-based chips. Depending on the vehicle, this began in 93. The only way to retrieve it is with a scanner.

I don't have a scanner, but can I use a laptop and an ALDL cable to get the codes? If so, is there a fee software that I can download to do this with?
      Thanks

Get TunerPro RT and you can scan it.

you'll need to build your own definition file for it though, as I don't think anyone made one. I have one for a 3100 (same ECM as yours, different code) and can scan mine and all that snazz aside from tune it. You'll need to get the ALDLSTUFF.zip file from moates.net filemanager section and read that and build up a .ads for tunerpro.

You can try my def but it likely won't show stuff up right, but might give you an idea how to go about it. Modify it with the proper info from the ALDLSTUFF.zip and you'll be on your way. You'd connect the same way as mine does. Make sure you connect in the code mode not the read sensors mode.

It can be done with some time and work.

where you you get the data line that has an OBD 1 or 2 port (which ever it's for) and a computer connector at the other end?

www.aldlcable.com is one place, or you can search and build your own. I built my own and went the complicated way but that insures it works 100% to specifications. But others have built them with 2 transistors and had success.

OBD2 there are cables out there but they are more complex and more expensive and require software still IIRC.
