I want to change my plugs without losing my hand.

How do I rotate the engine on a 1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme?

It has the 3100 and and Auto Tranny.

How can the engine rotate without removing the exhaust manifolds?

What kind of stuff should I be careful not to break?

    Thanks for any help.

In order to rotate the engine, you need to unbolt the front dogbone mounts. The exhaust manifold will not break as it has a flexible donut at the downpipe connection. To help get behind there, you can also remove the coilpacks and ICM, which gives extra room to get to the back side of the engine.

I tried to find a diagram for you, but didn't have any luck. But I did find this article: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm Probably says the exact same thing as a Haynes manual though.

That's assuming you have the UPPER dog bone mounts right? What if you just have the lower?

All w-bodies have the upper dog bone, hence the answer to the question.

Suzuki, in your case (beretta, grand am etc are like this) there is a side mount engine mount, and a dogbone. If you have the stock dogbone it will flex enough so that if you unbolt the 2 bolts in the wheel well upper mount (92+ style, not sure about older) and one on the top you can slide the engine/mount forward, and then bolt the top single bolt down and it will hold the engine forward. If you have a poly dogbone, you might need to unbolt one side of that to allow enough flex to pull it forward.

Here are some pics of how I do it in my Cutlass Supreme.

This is the puller installed on the drivers side dogbone area. I have one of the older dogbone brackets that it fits into. This particular tool can't be used with the newer style pitchfork dogbones, but they make a different tilter that works for the newer setup.

I removed the coils and ICM, but I also had the alternator out at the same time. This is the back of the engine in a Cutlass Supreme with everything out, including the alternator.

You don't have to remove the alt to get the plugs out, but I DO recommend removing the bracket that the coils are on. You can remove the entire bracket as one piece and leave the coils on it. There is 2 nuts on the bottom, and 2 bolts on the top of the upper intake manifold.

Right, thx Issac. I DO have a poly dogbone. And it is the L body I was referring to.
