  • 3100 lifter in 3.4L?

    Hi,

I'm swapping my 2.8L from my Fiero to a 3.4L. I was wondering if its OK to swap lifters from a 3100 engine onto the 3.4L? I'm told that they are 1.6 ratio and have a very nice oil splash nipple that retain oil on the ball and not put it on the valve cover. See below.

    That's a rocker arm, not a lifter.

If you mean 3400, you'd already have better ones.
If you mean 3.4 DOHC, they don't have rocker arms, cause, well, they're DOHC

I can't speak for the 3.4, but I can for the 2.8/3.1 That is a common swap for those engines, so seeing that the 3.4 is just a bored out 2.8/3.1, I don't see why it would not work. Please don't just down my throat if I am wrong, but it just seems like it will seeing that I did that to the 3.1 MPFI (gen 2) in my 1990 Grand Prix STE without any problems.

and I interpreted it to mean that you are swapping in the 3.4 that GM offeres in their performance parts catalog. It is popular with the S10's and stuff. It is suppose to be a direct replacment for the 2.8 in the older S10's.

edit: he does have a 3.4 RWD, I dunno anything about the differences with those. I didn't think they'd be an easy swap rather than a 3400...

                3100 rocker in 3.4L

I have the 3.4L, not the 3400. The 3.4L was made from '93-'95 for the Camaro/TA. I'm using this engine because it's the simplest swap for a Fiero with the exception of relocating the starter. 3400 has been done in a Fieros, but require much more work.

My cam is worn badly in this 3.4L and while I was searching for replacement cam, lifter, push rods, valve springs, and timing chain set, I received an email from a friend regarding this rocker. So I had "lifter" on my mine when I wrote about this rocker. I hated it when I make stupid mistakes like this. Sorry for the confusion.

lifters won't work I don't think since they are roller hydraulic and the 3.4 is flat tappet. The rockers you can use are the early 3100 style, the 94-95 ball and pivot ones. The roller fulcrum ones won't work since your heads won't have notches to keep them aligned.

At least I know you can do the 94-95 3100 rockers in the 3.1mpfi (gen2). Not sure about the iron head gen1. They are 1.6 ratio.

Ok so your are asking if a 3100 rocker will work.

Yes it will as long as it is the same non roller fulcrum rocker as the 3.4L. The 3100 from 94 to 96 had 1.6 ratio stamped rockers and they are a direct swap and will increase lift and effective duration of any cam you put in and will give you a bit more power.
