  • 3400 HIGH idle

When I start the car, the idle will begin at 2500rpms and climb past 3000. The idle never comes down. If I put the car in gear, it will jump forward w/out me touching the gas. The car will easily cruise at 10mph on a level surface w/out me pressing the gas pedal. It's an intermitent problem.. some days the car runs totally fine.

I thought it was the idle air control valve because I could get the condition to go away by pumping the gas pedal before starting the car. I replaced IAC and it's still idling high. Pumping the gas pedal before starting the car still seems to alleviate the problem.

Does anyone else know what it could be? Could it be the TPS?

    Thanks in advance!

No TPS cannot cause that. Be sure the throttle linkage is not sticking, keeping the throttle open.

Other than as was stated abotu the throttle linkage or, a faulty TPS, I cannot see any reasoning within this. Pumping the pedal would only open the throttle plate and move the TPS position. Unless you are saying you do this while cranking but, it does not sound that way.

Although, even a bad TPS will not cause this. If the throttle plate is in the idle position, it could only be the IAC opened or, a vacuum leak (which is ruled out already).

I had a bad computer (Althoguh OBDI not II) that opened the IAC to run the car at about 3100RPMs. The circuit to close it up was fried I guess.

I was thinking that pumping the pedal is causing the stuck linkage to disloge and return to normal. Plug the IAC port and see if it causes a stall. It should if there is no other leakage.

Yes, that is a good point, you should try putting out the IAC all the way and unplug it.

Turn the key on but down't start the engine, this will move the IAC pintle all the way out. Now, unplug it. Turn the key off and try from there. That will rule out the IAC. Or, if you get it to idle well you can unplug the IAC at a good idle and leave it liek that and try it.

Ended up being the TPS. Took me about 5 minutes to replace it. Still don't understand why it wasn't the IAC. I had replaced that first, but the condition persisted. I cleaned out the TB as well.

Whatever the f' ever. This car runs better than brand new now.

            Thanks for the suggestions.
