  • head bolts reuseable?

are the headbolts reuseable or are they a one time deal.

    cant remember right now.

id only need enough for one head so if they are not re useable would someone have the part number for the long and short ones.

they are reusable but not advisable as they stretch and break sometimes. youd be better off buying new ones.

I have reused them without a problem. They are torque to yeild, so you are supposed to replace them. My 3.1 didn't care (reused 3 times). The ARP head studs are reusable:P

kinda figured thats how they worked. for the life of me i couldnt remember.

these would be coming off the new motor which right now has about 7k on it, there shouldnt be a whole lot of anything going on with the bolts.

if i do need the does anyone have the part number for the long and short ones.

they are just sold in sets per head I believe. It depends on the vehicle as well, because some have a stud or something coming off the top. rockauto.com would be the easiest way to look them up. 00 grand am 3400 felpro ES74017

and difference with these than the GM ones or is it just price.

They could have 5 miles on them or 500,000 miles on them and they will still be in the same condition. They are torque to yield bolts, which means they stretch when you initially torque them. So having an engine with 7k on it says nothing about the condition of the head bolts.

All bolts or studs stretch when you torque them. But TTY bolts are stretched to the limit and loose some of their elasticity. So the next time you use them they do not put the same clamping load on the head.

Gen I bolts can be reused they are not TTY bolts. I don't think Gen II are TTY either. But Gen III are TTY for sure.

Gen1 bolts are 10.8 and the Gen3's are 11.x IIRC. Could check in the garage to be sure, but this means that the Gen3 bolts are actually harder and would break more easily.

I have re-used TTY bolts on several DD engines, but if you want to wind it at least use stock replacements IMO.

Most imprtant thng is when re-using bolts, don't go extra tight "for insurance". It sucks when something like that braks and have to take a couple steps back.

Replace them... I put a new set on every time I did head gaskets on that old 3400... and this time I smartened up and went with the ARP studs not only for more even and predictable clamping power but also so I could reuse them if necessary.

To me it's still hard to justify all that money for the ARP studs when the Felpro bolts are like $15

Yeah maybe, but I'd much rather have something that I know puts even clamping pressure on the head since I have had lots of headgasket issues with nitrous... It may have been because of the felpro headgaskets I was using but I don't know.

i just bought new bolts. figure its either 25 bucks for the bolts now when everything is apart and out of the car or alot of swearing and spending more money cause i cheaped out on 25 for bolts.

You are supposed to change bolts, as you have pry figured. I have re-used them almost every thime i have pulled a head on my 3400.
