  • Pulley Noise

So what exactly can cause belt/pulley noise?

Long story short, I replaced my power steering pump a few weeks ago with a 97 Lumnia power steering pump with "41k" miles on it (looks new as hell!) because the old one was squealing, the fluid was kinda brown, and the power steering would sorta "give out" at times in hard turns.

So I replace it with this pump, refill the tank with fresh synthetic "performance" power steering fluid and everything works great, wheel feels good, etc. Then I turn the wheels a bunch with the tank open, refilled fluid, and it's been good.

Now I notice this week, sometimes the pump squeals VERY LOUD, much louder than my old dying pump. Checked fluid, fine. I held a paper towel onto the grooves of the pulley while it's spinning and I got some dirt on it and the squealing stopped. It then started again a few moments later.

I then tried it again but this time the belt caught the towel and ran it around the pulley a few times. Again, no noise. It fell to the ground and it was silent for a few seconds then started to make noise again.

I can hear it from inside the car, but after 1500 RPM's it seems to go silent. Under 1500, it's loud.

Idearz? I now get looks from my ultra loud steam spewing raw smelling exhaust AND my awful squealing engine

sounds like your belt may not be tight enough.

Oh it's tight enough... since the compressor pulley doesn't mount perfectly against the 3500 block it's out a bit further making me actually need a LONGER belt... almost. It's near impossible to get that belt on/off because it's so tight. I've considered getting like a 1/2" longer belt.

      Maybe it's TOO tight?

thats a possibility also. but you said when you used paper towell on it ,it quit for a few seconds. maybe its getting some tpe of liquid from somewere on it. is it a old belt, does it have any weather cracks in it.if so that could be causing it to.

It's a fairly new looking belt, it came off the 3100 that was in there and it looked brand new.

Is there anything that I could safely try to spray on the belt to make it quit?
