Can anyone tell me quickly if I can put a 2001 3.1L in a 1996 (both luminas)with simply changing the sensors and fuel rail? I am concerned with the cam profile. Is the gross lift and duration the same in both engines? I looked on cskauto.com and the engines use a different cam shaft part number but i think it may be due to the fact that the distributor drive gear was removed from the cam blank.

yes, it will fit and work.
The distributor drive gear is still there. No drive means no oil pump.
The difference is the ring that the cam sensor reads off of. That is the difference, but it should still work the same. They are just reversed from each other (one is a solid ring with a notch, the other is no ring with a tab).Taylor
