  • timing chain crank sprocket..

Has anyone ever had trouble getting one on?

My stock one slips on and off with ease, but this replacement NAPA unit does not want to slip on all the way.

should i force it on, or just return it ?

      Bah,

I just used sand paper and sanded the I.D. with my finger for a minute

      Went on like a charm.

I can't get over how much larger the <99 chain is, it's HUGE compared to the old "newer" one.

Yes I used one of these chains on my first 3400, NEW cloyes set, but it sounds like it stretched pretty bad on a STOCK setup... I have yet to remove the cover to confirm that but rocking the crank back and forth with the flywheel you can hear the chain click when it picks up slack... so I don't know how much stronger it actually is. But yes it's huge in comparison.

is this one of the things where its better to go to the dealer for.
it sounds like the non oem chains dont hold up that well.

is there a particular reason why after 99 they switched chains.

might have to add this to my list of parts to get. while this thing is out of the car dont want to go through this while its in the car.
so not to sound retarded but the chain in my 99 3400 is bigger than my 05 3400.
hmm ill have to go check the condition of my 99 and see how that held up after 93k. with me driving 20k of that it wasnt an easy 20k on the engine.

Mars, are you using GM chain? They reportedly don't stretch as much as the cloyes.

There are other brands, like S&A gear but no idea if anyone has tried those.

The new ones I think are quieter perhaps?

I just put an S&A Gear chain on my '94 Corsica. Can't say yet how well it'll hold up. I avoided Cloyes based on some comments around here.

Remember when switching to the pre 99 ones you need the pre 99 center chain guide too... I don't know if that was mentioned anywhere... the newer one is wider which will put pressure on the chain if attempted to be installed.

so they did the switch on the 00+ cars. so if i go in and order the parts for 99 for the sake of simplicity ill get the right chain and gears. or could i use the gears i have now from my 99 3400

I'm not sure the year it changed. It could vary in 99 either way. Like how you could get a small or large port 3100 in 99....

I'd go for a 98 or older just to be sure. That's how I always do things. The older setup is actually cheaper when going aftermarket. No idea on dealer prices though.

well thats gm partsdirect. i usually just take the msrp price they list and thats usually what you will pay.

those 3 items from the will run a little over 100 from gmpartsdirect.

ill measure my 99 chain and see if it matches up with what the bigger ones are.

they list it for 96-99 on the 3400 and 94-98 on the 3.1 but its the same part number

might do some destruction on the 3100 in the beretta to see what the chain size is in that. and how it is slack wise after 180k

It will be the larger. And it will be sloppy. 180k... That's the main noise you hear in the 3100's is the chain hitting the guide. Turn the engine back and forth with a socket and listen to the slack.

ahh the engines going with the car when it gets scrapped. im just curious on what it looks like.

i use to get the lifter noise or piston slap whatever the hell its called for like 20 minutes when the car was cold. lets just say that engine had issues.

see my when rust attacks post on bstuff. most of the car is going on Jons pink car. he has the bumpers gfx and seats. not much left on the car.
