  • Intake gaskets - 2k 3400

Need to help a friend out with his 2000 Alero. His 3400 is leaking coolant, and a shop in town looked it over and determined it to be leaking intake gaskets. They want $450 to do the work, but he wanted to see what was involved in doing it himself (I'd be helping too). If this were my car, I'd just tear in to it, but since it's not, I need to find out what is involved, what I need to look out for, any tips, etc.

    Thanks

Well, i have only done it once, but there isn't a whole lot you need to know IMO. If you have torn apart a 3.1, its close to that. My only experience was with a 96 beretta. The only part I didnt like was the coil packs being in the way of the alternator bolt to one bracket.

I have done 3 of them. My car, a 1997 Transport, and a 1999 Chevy Maliubu.

Tip #1. Get the alt out of the way
Tip #2. If you think that it will be in the way, go ahead and take it out.
Tip #3. Don't mix up the pushrods (oops )

To do it effectively, the DIS, ALT, airbox, and just about everything on top has to come out. To get the rear valve cover off, just go ahead and remove the stud that is in your way. Don't bother trying to work around it unless you have an 8mm wrench.

      Airbox has to come out
Throttle body has to come off
DIS, power steering pump, and ALT have to come out
      Front and rear valve covers
      upper intake
      lower intake

Before you start, go ahead and drain the coolant. You will still get some in there, but not as bad as if you forget to drain it.

          Alright, this is sounding good..
Now forgive my ignorance, but I've never taken off the valve covers of a 660, I know how to get them off, but to get the pushrods out, don't I also have to remove the rockers? I've seen a L67 with the valve covers off, but I'm asking since I know the 90 degree and the 660 may be different.
He wants to do this tomorrow, so looks like we'll take on the project.

You don't have to completely remove the rocker arms, just loosen the nuts on them and the pushrods will come right out.
