  • Cam install.

I searched, came up with nothing.

What I want to accomplish :

    - Change cam without removing LIM and UIM.

    Can it be done?

I figure, turn engine upside down on a stand, loosen rockers, remove timing set, turn cam a few times either by hand or other, re-re the cam and voila??

    Is it that simple?

I JUST did the intake gaskets and don't want to re-do them which is why i am asking.

ANOTHER way would be to get 12 of them telescopic magnets and throw one in each hole?? would that work??

I'm sure someone here has tried this ??

    Thank you.

I think Damon's 3400 is still on the engine stand, maybe he can put the cam back in with the lifters, flip it upside down and see if the lifters will fall into the gudes enough to clear the bearings and get the cam out.

I'll see if he's working nights this week and stop by his place, i need to pick up my cherry picker anyways...

The lifters should fall into the guides enough to clear the cam... but I duno how freely they will 'fall' into the guides.. You probably could do this, but just take your time doing it...

Yup you can do it easily. Just loosen the rockers and give the cam a turn when the engine is upside-down. The lifters will all bump back and you will be able to slide the cam out. Oh and don't forget the oil pump drive gear. LSX guys do it all the time. In fact they can often do it with the engine right side up and the lifters will stay put. But our lifters are a little more upright and would probably fall back down.

Yeah, see, a guy at work is an LSX guy, and he was telling me about this trick.

            Thats for confirming this.

            Appreciate it.

Flip car up-side down, and bore a hole in the inner fender.... ?

already thought of boring a hole in the inner fender.

could have thought someone did that before.

If anything magnets to hold the lifters up would work. Just not sure how you would hold them all up at the same time... :P

                        BAck from the dead, kinda.

                        I have everything apart now...

I think I'll have to remove the LIM so that I can remove the distributor shaft thing...

Has anyone removed this without removing the intakes??

I also wanted to prime the oil pump first, I don't think you can do that without having the LIM off right ?

Also, when I pull the timing set off, where do the marks have to be? and is it #1 piston that needs to be @ TDC?

I lost my Haynes manual, darn it.

I turned my 3.4 upside-down on the stand and only two lifters fell out. They had to be tapped a couple of times to get them to come out.

With the old cam installed, I'll give it a spin with the rocker arms loose, the lifers should all fall low enough to re-re a cam...

I'll post my results in a couple weeks.

Other question, can the oil pump be primed without removing the intakes??
