  • swapping old 3100 to new 3100

I have a 97 lumina. Been thinking about getting the newest generation 3100 (2000+) to replace my old engine. I know a lot of folks "upgrade" to 3400, but I just want to keep it simple and cheep.

Since some engines are sold without the accessories, is this a trouble-free swap? Can I use my old alternator, starter, power steering, etc.?

Will it bolt directly to my old tranny? did they change any of bolts hole locations in the upgrade design?

Are the electrical connectors different? thanks.

3400 and 2000+ 3100 are same thing except the 3400 has more bore. Same issues when swapping them over. Everything is the same except a few things. 3400swap.com outlines most of them. The EGR you can use the 2000+ EGR and tube as your computer can control it just fine.

I dont think 3400swap.com works right anymore.. was just on it..

youll need the EGR adapter from the store here, youll more than likely need to get a 3 wire temp sensor, transfer all your sensors, and a few other minor details.

No he will NOT need an EGR adapter. He is 97, which is OBDII. So he can use any 96+ EGR and the computer will control it just fine. Just use the 2000+ EGR tube and EGR. Or get a 96-99 3400 plenum which uses the 96-99 EGR.

The EGR adapters on the store here are for the 3 solenoid OBD1-1.5 motors. He has the OBDII linear.

Thanks for the info. I can't seem to get the 3400 swap site to work either. I heard the pdf files from that site are stored here, but this site says something about "download limit reached" or something when I click on them.

Anyhow, I'm taking my car to a mechanic to get another opinion about what the noise is in my old engine. I briefly let him listen to it yesterday, he thinks it's valvetrain related and he wants to check the pressure, etc.

I hope I didn't switch a pushrod or something (see lifter-noise thread), but if I did that, wouldn't it be a useless pile of junk right now (it works pretty good-except for noise)?

3400swap.com is in the process of moving servers (to our server.. yea!), so yes, it isn't 100% function as of yet. As far as the guide goes, lemme see if I can get you a working link....

I've noticed that the injectors look different on the newer engines. Don't know if it matters.

                    multec 1's vs multec 2's

you should be able to use your stock fuel system though
