  • Replacing LIM

    Im gonna tackle this bi*ch tommorow. I opted for the cheaper Victor gasket set, despite knowing they had fel-pro in stock. I'm not running dex cool any more, and I dont think the victor set is the same shity design as the stock...

    its not that i cant do the job, im just not looking forward to it. I'll photo document the process, as it might come in handy for others reference.

    edit: after reading techgeeks thread, i am not going to document even a fart during the process, as it's been done... thank-you, and good night.

    the rear rocker cover, kind hard to get at the bottom bolt on the serpentine side... i haven't yet sworn, but i decided to take off the bracket that holds the tensioner, as the bracket is in my way of the rocker bolt...
    im guessing now its on some kind of guide pin because even with all bolts out it's still a motherfu*%er to pull the bracket off.

    this bracket does come off with only three bolts yes?

      I would highly suggest the Felpro metal "problem solving" gaskets if you can take what you have back. Those will last forever... what you got, dunno.

          I believe exhaust are longer... but make sure first.... (I should know I just did this... but verify before you take my word!)

            yeah, exhaust shorter... i just had to make sure and pulled it apart agian... all is well, but so many little snags... i had a f#$k of a time with the injectors, and now i have to find an o-ring for the fuel rail.... of cousre i had it... dropped it into the motor but found it, was pulling it up, and it slipped from the needle-nose and fell into never-never land... cant find o-ring kit... getting sore...

              INTAKES = SHORT.
              EXHAUST = LONG.

              BTW that alternator bracket has 4 bolts IIRC. You should be able to get the valve cover bolt off without taking it off. I left the alternator bracket on when I changed the LIM and timing cover!! Just use a flexible extension if you can't get it...

              If just replacing the gasket, you can leave the fuel rail on the LIM and just disconnect the hoses from the firewall and pull it off as one unit... You gotta use quick disconnect tool to un-do them.

                by the looks of my lines, i decided to go with removing the rail... all done now... decided to match the port sizes of the UIM to the LIM, noticed there was some opening up that could be done...
                I used the same type of gasket, and I could see clearly where the other one failed... one of two things, I'll modify the engine at a later date (when Im not so poor) or only drive it another 100,000 kms... either way, the gasket will last that long, and should I do anything in the future, it would probably be a 3400 swap anyways... it's probably easier than this stupid gasket job...

                  have to be more careful with wires in the future, IAC and IAT (PCM thinks it's -31 F outside) codes... jiggle wires, get readings on scan tool... POS...

                    You must be rough with wires.... I've had mine off probably 20 times and never had a code...

                    Did you get the pushrods right? What you said above was wrong...

                    Don't expect the gasket to last another 100k. My original one did, but the replacement (done correctly) lasted only like 2 years.
