  • Oil Filter Question

I changed the oil on my 3500 GP for the first time after about 50ish miles of driving around town on it, changed just to get all of the assembly lube out and to ensure nothing metalic was in the oil.

Oil was very clean, all was good. Since I decided to put regular Penzoil in there again for another few hundred miles then change it again, I went cheap and got a Fram filter vs my usual Mobil 1 filter.

Primed the filter with oil, filled engine with oil, started it up and now I have some nice valvetrain noise.

I started thinking WTF, that wasn't there before. Let it warm up, still there, drove it a little bit, still there. Check oil level, still there. Same weight as before, same case of oil even.

I hop on Google and search around for Fram filters, and found a huge comparison of oil filters. It said many times that if you experience valvetrain noise after installing a fram filter, it is due to their shitty anti drainback valve or something.

So my question is, can I take off the filter and not have all of my oil coming out on me? It has been in there for maybe 2 miles, I rather not drain the whole pan again.

I used to use FRAM's crap (only once) they maid my valves tick so I went back to AC delco filters and the problem went away fram used to be good but that was a long time ago.

Well I put my Mobil 1 filter on (bairly lost any oil, thanks!)... noise is still there... WTF?

It sounds like it's either coming from a front/right rocker, or injector. I don't get why a noise would all of a sudden surface after an oil change?

something tells me this a pretty common noise to come out of these motors... I experiance the same type of noise as well, however mine tends to diminish a little more once the engine is at operating temps... that leads me to think that it's due to expansion... that being said... (this is where an experienced guy chimes in)...

Any other ideas? I had my mechanic listen to it, he said he wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to get louder, he could not pinpoint the sound however.

I asked if I could have mistorqued a rocker and now it is lose, he said if it was lose it would sound much worse.

What bugs me is that it didn't do it before, but it does it now?!? It could have started right before the oil change and I wouldn't have noticed.

When you changed the oil, you got rid of all of the assembly lube inside the engine. That could be it, perhaps...
