  • hi rev when starting

    I asked a question a few weeks back about pistons on re build and oil pressure. Still trying to get going. I completely did a rebuid on a 94 grand prix 3100. I started it and everything was good except oil pressure light. I wanted to spin oil pump and took off top plenum to get at it, I also took off the one fuel line. I put everything back together and now the car instantly revs to 3000 rpms and I shut it off right away. I do have one wire that I cant find where it plugs in. It's a 2 wire, 1 orange and 1 black. Comes out of a main wire loom by the master cylinder and will only reach to the near side coil. The plug is clean and I'm sure it must go somewhere. I looked at a 96 and it was just hanging there . the oil pressure was good when I checked it with a gauge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    May be a vac leak, and the two wire plug may go to one of the purge valve things down below the coils. I can't remember which color the wires are.

    Also make sure you have all three plugs in the ignition module, two on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. It could be one of those... if so it would most likely be the one on the passenger side.

      sounds like a intake leak, retorque your LIM and plenum.

        Did you use new gaskets for the intake manifolds? Use silicone on the ends where the gaskets don't seal?

          Yep, I used new gaskets. I used silicone on the lower intake. I'm not sure what the LIM is. It idled fine before I took top plenum off, I can see gasket material around top plenum. It does seem like it would be air getting into the intake, but I can't see where that is happening. The orange and black wire has me confused. I can't find a plug end for it but, it is perfectly clean it was plugged in somewhere. Thanks for your input.

            LIM = Lower intake manifold.
            The canister purge soleniod may be where that plug goes its behind the coil packs below them on the bracket. Also there is 2 vacuum lines going to it, they like to slip out too. IIRC it has a red clip I think on the connector... I think... Is that how your orange/black one is?

            EDIT: So you re-used your plenum gasket? It came off in one piece? Might try taking it off, and rubbing some oil on both sides of the gasket to help it seal more or get a new gasket. I've re-used old paper gaskets on my plenum and throttle body by coating them with a little oil without any problems.

              I did figure out what the LIM was. Thanks. I took top plenum off checked everything and put some copper gasket spray on gaskets. I know where the canister purge is and it is hooked up. It does have a red clip on it. Still can't find plug for wire. I'm thinking the IAC may be bad. I had the air cleaner off While it was running, I got it down to 2500 rPM's, and it was really sucking in air from intake tube. If you put your hand over the tube it would suck it right in. I don't have an ohm meter to check it thought. Still trying I appreciate all of your thoughts.
