  • 94 3100 corsica is running poor

i have a 94 corsica with the 3100. it runs fine when cold, but once it starts warming up, it runs very poorly. for starters, it has this rolling idle that eventually leads to the engine flooding out and dieing. with the pedal to the floor and cranking it puffs a big cloud of black and sometimes blueish smoke and restarts. then after taking off, it pings, doesnt have any power and almost acts like the throttle isnt opening even though it is. after some to the floor action and pinging it will go. it isnt misfiring becuase the vibration that i had just fixed is gone by putting the plugs and wires on. also if i put it into park it dies, or at speed, if i let off the gas it just dies. also i heard what i think might be a lifter rattle that is always present. it overheats at lights when i have to be on the brake and the gas. i have no MIL light and my coolant temp runs normal except when stopped and i have no other warning lights on. i just put a fpr on since it was sucking fuel into the vacuum line, i replaced the hard -plastic vacuum lines and the plugs and wires and air filrter.i went over all the vaccum lines, the injectors, fuel rail and intake plenum both hot and cold with a propane torch and i get no reaction. now since the fpr was leaking into the vacuum line, is it possible the MAP is bad. and the lag in acceleration maybe the TPS? im a ford guy and have very little experience with these motors so any help would be appreciated. i just want to get it to idle so that i dont always have to run the brake and gas at the same time. thanks in advance!!

Very good chance that the MAP is shot due to it getting fuel into it. I would also look into changing out your O2 sensor.

      so many questions...so little time

thanks, i was wondering about the O2 as well, also, when it gets hot, it smells almost like something is smoking hot, is it possible that with the car running badly and having a few cylinders fouled out, could the catalytic converter have gotten plugged and be causing me problems.....i know i pulled the egr valve and it was completly carboned up. i cleaned it as best i could, but i dunno, if it is working right yet......when i pulled the egr off, i noticed some moisture in the intake portion of the valve, is that normal?....thanks for the help!!

I'd say your cat is clogged too. Since it was running so rich, it could of overheated and screwed it up. Since it has no power and that pinging you hear could be the downpipe flange open and snapping shut from the backed up pressure (it bolts on with spring loaded bolts).

There is water vapor in exhaust fumes, so the water in the EGR could be just condensation from that.

Also check the sides of the lower intake manifold and check your oil cap to see if you have milky build up. If so it needs a new lower intake manifold gasket ASAP as it's dumping coolant into the oil and that can ruin the bottom end of the motor.

A new O2 will help it run a lot better even on a car that seemed to run fine if it has a lot of miles. More power and response and MPG.

thanks alot for the info on the cat....thats a good point since i have a exhaust leak that gets randomly better and worse, somewhere up front in the engine bay. i checked, and the oil is still think and there is no milky stuff by the oil cap, but it does smell of gas vapors, so i know i need a oil change as soon as i fix these problems. thanks again

I agree with the clogged cat diagnosis. I dealt with this on my '96 Achieva... which is essentially the same car as a corsica. I removed the two bolts holding the exhaust pipe to the rear manifold... which isn't TOO difficult if you have some long extensions and deep well (6 pt!) sockets. There was a little bar across the exhaust 'hump' that keeps the pipe from falling down all the way. Then I drove it down the road (not too far- don't want to melt things). With the exhaust unbolted at the manifold, the engine ran very obviously better. It's a relatively easy way to confirm or eliminate the converter as a potential problem.

Then I removed the cat, cut it apart, and busted all the clogged substrate out of it. Welded it up, reinstalled it, and it ran great... the exhaust was a little louder, though.

Yup sounds like you are on the right track. New cat should fix the major problem then it's just tune up stuff to get it running perfect. Yes do change the oil when you were running rich it was dumping too much fuel and that ran into the oil.

If you don't have emessions testing in your area and they just inspect to see if the Cat is physically there you could hollow it out like tractorman did. Since your car is a 94 you don't have a 2nd O2 sensor to tell the car if the Cat is working or not, so no worries there.

thanks everybody ....im going to price a cat to see how much it is to do it right, but they dont inspect at all in my area, and i only bought the car for $200, so i may just put a staight section of pipe in....it will depend upon cost. thanks for all your help.
