  • 2.8 Rebuild

You guys will have to forgive me some, as I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the automobile. I do know that I do NOT have a DOHC, so I am not posting in there. Technically, I am looking at a swap, but this question falls into this area better.

I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee, with the 2.8 V6. This is the same engine that was in the S10's of the time.

I know that my best option is to buy a 3.4 crate engine, but I am not interesting in spending that kind of money (yet).

When I bought the Jeep, I also got two extra engines (both 2.8's) thrown into the deal. (I should have ran away at that point).

My current engine is about to throw a rod. It runs, but I know it is a matter of time.

One of the engines is already broken down into its componets. (Not sure if I have all of the parts). My dad showed me scratches on the thingy (round part of the rod that attachs to the crank.)

The second engine is assembled, but I do believe my crank is broke. (it doesn't turn).

Now for the questions. At some point, I will be swaping out the engine (the 3.4 or even a 350), for now, I just want to have something in there that won't die on me. I also don't want to spend a bunch of money to rebuild an engine that will be tossed when I do swap it out.

Can I do this on the cheap? I don't mind spending $400 or so. I know that the power of the 2.8 is nothing to brag about, so I am not worried about power enhancments. I just want to be able to drive the Jeep to an off-roading experience that is hours away. If something breaks, I want it to be because I broke the axle, not because the engine gave out.

Would it be safe to exchange parts between the engines? (Say one piston was crap, but the other engine has a good one.)

as long as the engines are the same, then you can swap parts with no problems. You just have to check to be sure they are the same.

$400 can get you pretty far. I say try to get a reman crank (I paid like $150 for a complete crankshaft with bearings).

first see which oversize parts you need like bearings and pistons/rings..then
get a rebuilt kit off ebay, they are cheap there.

      good luck with your car/engine.
