  • where is speed sensor?

I have a 89 corsica, 2.8L. Speedometer is going whacky and idle keeps surging. I am thinking it may be the vehicle speed sensor? Does anyone know where it is on my engine?

First off you are posting in the wrong section. Your 2.8L is a pushrod engine. Not DOHC. And if your VSS is in the same place as the DOHC's then it is on the passanger side on the shaft of the tranny. You should be able to see it if you take the passanger side tire off and look on the shaft of the tranny.

check the top side of the trans, above and inbetween the axles. there shoud be a 2 wire connector on it. purple and yellow wires if i remember right. check the gear on the bottom, some are plastic and do fail.

i also remember some using a sensor on the the hub. i dont know if your year had it, may have only been the years to use abs. if its on the hub, ull notice it right away as its the only thing on the hub with wires going to it.

      hope this helps

I know this is not your tranny or car, but this is where the stock VSS is located in my Cutlass Supreme 4T60-E. Yours should be in about the same area.

found a better pic. The VSS is the small black sensor on the end of the tranny. Keep in mind that the older one is bigger, and has like 3 bolts holding it down. This is the new sensor which is magnetic. Yours will have a gear and stuff. The gear is plastic and has been known to break.

Thanks so much mpfi. So if is it located on passenger side? Hard to tell for me with the engine out. On passenger side near firewall? When i look strait down pass my alternator, I see a wire with there running into tranny?

                yes. Passenger side.

I think yours will have a housing coming out of the top of the end with 2 13mm bolts holding it down. The gear and shaft will be under that housing. That is how my older 440T4 did. I think yours will be more like the 440T4 than the 4T60-E.

I don't know if you have the 3 speed tranny or the 4 speed tranny.

Here is 2 pics of the corsica 4 speed:

And here is the 3 speed.

sorry for the crappy pics, but i just snagged them off of ebay.

                    he has a 3spd.
                    4 spd did'nt come optional on a beretta/corsica till 94...which was the 4t60-e.

but either way it'll be on either the driver or passenger side axle....
