  • Quick 3.1 Intake Manifiold Gasket ???

    Hi All!

As some of you may know, I am putting a 3.1 together for my Fiero

I am finally starting to assemble the engine, Yeah!

However, I have run tinto a small snag...

The Head Gasket set I bought came with two types of Upper to Lower Intake Gaskets, One Metal and One Paper.

The instructions say to use the same as was used previously, or I will have bad vacuum leaks.

Here is my problem: The gaskets are not there on my junkyard parts

How do I know which ones I need to use?

    Thanks,
    -Don

3.1L Gen II engines used the paper gaskets.

        Here is an interesting twist...

The head gasket set is from Corteco - that is the set that supplied both types of gaskets (paper and metal)

Now, I just picked up the Pan valley gasket (why isn't that supplied with the complete head gasket set??? ) set, made ny Fel-Pro.
There is only one type of LIM to UIM gaskets - Metal!!!

The Fel-Pro set I got is for a 1992 Buick Regal...

        Now what???

        Thanks!

there was an updated gasket. The early 3.1's used the paper ones, but like 1992 or 1993 they went to the metal ones.

Look at the INTAKE MANIFOLD BOLTS. If they are SOLID METAL, then you use the PAPER gaskets. If you have thinner bolts with RUBBER SLEEVES, then you use the metal gaskets.

I want to say that the older style with the paper gaskets, the upper intake manifold bolts will be able to screw into the power steering pump, but the newer ones are too thin. I dont think I have a pic of the comparison, but if your new set has rubber inserts, then you will use the metal ones.

If you try to use the METAL GASKETS on the older setup, you WILL break your plenum.
