  • Whats Your Compression readings?

Whats your readings? I have a 2000 3.1 malibu, 77,000 miles, took all 6 plugs out w cold engine and cranked 5 seconds per cylinder and got 180-140 lbs, trying to figure out if i have blown head gasket.

I have a 3.4 crate motor, and it's very low mileage.

It runs about 185 across the board.

You didn't state which cylinders were 180 and which were 140. Ideally there should be no more than about 10% difference.

Do you have more than one cylinder at 140? Does your gauge thread into the spark plug hole? Was it fully seated?

Why do you suspect a blown head gasket? Did the engine overheat or run very hot? Oil in the water or vice versa?

More info might yield more answers to your inquiry.
If I had all the money that I've spent on race cars back... I'd spend it on race cars!

The only 60 degree V6 that I've checked compression on was a 3100 in a '96 Achieva with 190,000 miles. One cylinder read 165, the rest were in the 180-190 range.
