cleaning carbon off of valves

I got my 3500 heads taken apart over the weekend and Im in the process of cleaning everything up. Some of the valves have a carbon buildup along the seat. Is there any way to get it off without ruining the seats? Ive tried just some carb cleaner and that got off all of the residue but not the "chunks" Any help is appreciated.

Nevermind, got it off. Used a pocket knife to get most of it off and steel wool for the rest.

I was worried about using anything too abrasive around where the valve seats.

I've used it on wheels before to remove brake dust, i'm sure it would work...

I wonder if easy off has a strong base in it? If so that can pit aluminum.

That's what I would be concerned about using it on my 3400 upper.
