I was changing spark plugs on my friends 97 cutlass 3100 and noticed this plug laying on the top side of the uim near the alternator not attached to anything. I looked everywhere to find the spot for it and couldnt. Anyone know what it is and where it goes?

I think that is the connector used if you have variable assist power steering, and if you did it would plug in somewhere on the power steering pump.

no, it's defi the EVO (Electronic Variable Orifice, aka. variable assist steering) connector, and judging by the fading on the connector, it's never been hookered up. If the car does have variable assist, there will be an electronic solenoid that sits in between the pump and the high-pressure P/S hose, the connector faces towards the alternator.
GM's good about that, they use one universal harness for a motor. Every GM EVO plug connector is that color: red plug, grey weatherseal with a blue wire shield like that. I have yet to see one that's a different color, be it a Chevy, Saturn, Pontiac, OldsN-body enthusiast:

{'98 Grand Am SE - 2.4 Q4} / {'99 Grand Am GT1 - 3400 60* v6}

I haven't seen a "free" connector like that on my 'Bu and I don't have variable assists, what i do have however that uses a red connector is an emiisions control device that controls vacuum to the EVAP canister IIRC. This valve is located towards the TB end of the engine, below and behind the coil packs.

A '95 Lumina has the same connector going to the EVAP valve. The valve was located on a bracket that was also used as a spacer for the coil packs. It has a brown wire and a green with white stripe wire. The valve is about 1" square x 2" long and has the connector on the same end as the hose fitting.MinusOne - 3100 - 4T60E

im not sure if this wire is long enough to reach down behind the coil packs but i will double check it. Im 99% sure that its for the variable assist power steering now though.Lots of mods cost lots of $$

Look back by the EVAP canister purge. In my A friend of mine had that on his, but in my pink car, I had it plugged into something that was attached to the EVAP PURGE.
Basically, most cars have one evap, but my pink car had two.
As for the connector for the PS pump, on my twin cam, it is coming from the ECM. Not the back of the engine.
If I get around to it, I will take a pic of the dual evap thing that my pink car had.Taylor
