  • should i be worried about this oilpan

ok well im finally getting around to putting the bottom end back on, and cleaning out the oil pan only to find a bunch of little crack and some long ones.
well ive never looked inside of an oil pan so i dont know if this is normal or if i should start looking for a new oil pan.

Looks normal to me, however, I don't remember ever seeing the inside of a new one either.

I remember my spare one looking like that (casting flaws) but that big long defect kinda bugs me in the 2nd pic.

yeah thats what kinda bugged me when i cleaned ll the oil off. i might just start sourcing out one on ebay or something.

ive never seen the inside of one so it new stuff for me. i expected casting flaws saw it all the time at the diecasting plant i worked in.

i just dont want to spend all thi time rebuilding and modding it only to have it leak oil or the oil to to blow to shit when i get it back in the car.

that looks normal but yes that last pick looks like a long flaw, is there any sign of the cracks on the outside??

Hit it with brake parts cleaner on the outside, it should show a crack if one is there.

didnt see anything on the outside. i just rubbed the crap out of it with a paper towel didnt see anything.

i didnt notice this crap before cause as you know jon the chocolate milk that was in there kinda hid it.

ill go to walmart or something and pick some brake cleaner up. just dont want the damn thing to spring a nasty leak once its in the car.

just got to get the rwd 3.4 headgaskets and make the combust chamber bigger and find a sweet cam and shell be done.

I haven't had one of those oil pans off, myself... so I can't tell you from direct experience. I have seen casting flaws in in aluminum that look like cracks (but aren't). It's pretty common. I'd clean it off real good and look close- if you still can tell for sure, then take a die grinder with a sanding pad, sand it down and have a look. If it sands right out... then it isn't a crack.

yeah i was thinking about doing that. ill try sanding it down a little and see. it doesnt look like it even goes deep, kinda comparable to a scratch in the clearcoat. you know not deep enough to cause any problems but looks like crap.

thats all normal , ive seen inside alot of aluminum pans and they all look the same, even the long one seems fine, just fill it up with water and see if it leaks, because water will leak faster than oil.

before it came out of the car the pan itself wasnt leaking. thats all the crap from the lim gasket goin south.

thanks for the tip ill try it tomorrow. they all look like surface defects, meaning they dont go deeper than the thickness of paper.
