  • engine dead, need replacement what fits?

I have 96 gp with the 3.1L vin M that is dead. shop said the only years that would fit are 96-97. Are there other years that I can tell them that are direct replacement? The quoted me $975 for one the 100k. not including the labor.
    thanks

I was going relatively fast thru a school zone and was caught. However, I managed to zip into a neighborhood and evade the cop. Could I get additional tickets by trying to run?

96-99 should be direct replacements. 94-95 would also work, although you might have to use some parts from your engine (ie, plenum, since the EGR mounting is different). 00+ will also work, and get you more power and probably lower mileage as well. You could also go with a 3400 .

$975 for an engine with 100k on it is absolutely ridiculous!!! I paid $350 for a 02 3400 with ~32k on it back in 04. Browse around www.carpart.com to see if you can find one locally for cheaper. And where are you located? Might be someone close who could help you out and save on the labor as well.

I would NOT put a motor in that has 100,000 miles!!!

Yeah you can pretty much put any 3100/3400 in there just a few issues like matching up the right EGR and stuff.

Not sure if your LIM is threaded on the coolant pipe or not. But if it is, then you can just tap the new LIM from a newer 3100/3400 to make it work. The EGR from an 00+ motor is different but uses the same wiring & connector. So if you get say a new 3100/3400 2000+ just use it's EGR and tap the LIM to fit your threaded fitting. I think that's the only things that you would run into. Other things you can swap from the old motor such as accessories or fuel rail if it's different. You will probably need the EGR tube from the new motor too since the EGR is different.

the motor overheated pretty bad and now blows lots of white smoke. car has 168K so its prob. better just to drop in a new motor. the shop wants the easiest swap possible and they dont seem to have much faith in swapping anything else. If i find a newer 2000+ 3100/3400 everything bolts right in and just have to swap the fuelrail and use the newer EGR? thanks for all the help. By the way I live in Manitowoc, WI

You'd re-use your old injectors and FPR. I dont know if the fuel rail lines are bent at the right way to match up with your fuel lines or not. But it's probably easier anyways to just unbolt your old railes with the injectors and FPR still attached and re-use em. for the 2000+ 3100/3400 you will need the 2000+ EGR valve too, and the tube that goes from the EGR to the exhaust manifold. You will re-use your exhaust manifolds. The only other issue that I can recall would be the LIM has a coolant pipe that goes to it, and your's is probably the screw in type and the new ones are push in. You could get the push-in pipe, mod your pipe to work (I think some people have cut their pipe, and the push in, and put a piece of rubber hose between the two before), or tap the new LIM with NPT threads to fit your threaded setup.

Or a 96-98 3400 minivan (venture/etc) will have the threaded style LIM, and I think the EGR will be exact same mounting as yours so nothing needs to be done there. That *should* be a direct swap with no issues. (re-use your throttle body though as linkage will be different, and you can always swap your throttle body linkage on later yourself to the larger 56mm 3400 TB).

EDIT: you may have to swap over your accessories (alternator/etc), or not. Just depending on how it looks. Take a look here shows swapping a 3400 into a 94 3100 beretta, and what to look out for on the accessories. http://www.angelfire.com/super/ghettoretta/swap.htm
