  • 95 Grand am v6 w/spun bearing @ 56k miles (help!)

Well maintained car, Mother in law only drive about 20 miles a day on the avg. The car was running good before bring in the car for a routine oil change and tire rotation. Mother in law said there was a wining notice once in a while.

The shop notifies me and said the intake manifold was leaking and asked if I wanted to have it repair, I oked it.

Shop does the work, per the shop manager, they start the car, cars running good for a couple of minutes and then the engine began to knock! The investigate and finds out that there is no oil flowing on the valves, so they change the oil pump, then they changed the lifters, Now they think the engine had spun a bearing, but they had to pull the engine out to investigate. After the engine was pulled I noticed the following items.

    1) Cam had a sharp burr on the end were the timing chain mounts.

    2) Thin long metal shaving

    3) Bearing scratched, shop manager said from removing the cam.

    4) Bearings showing Brass like ware marks through the nickel like metal bearings

    5) Bearing oil hole at about 4:30 position

    6) Belt tensioner look to have gouged/ spun (marks) into timing chain cover

Shop manager was not sure if the bearings had spun or not so he said the would sent the engine to a machine shop.

The verdict was the bearings had spun? My research shows the too little oil would cause the bearing to spin or too much!!

    Help! Any thoughts!

Well, I can't see how a whine on start up has any thing to do with a leaky intake manfold gasket. Did you have the oil tested, probably not but just asking. My best guess (avoiding possible coincedence), maybe they got dirt in your lifter valley and valve train when they changed removed/replaced the manifold. With enough contamination in the oil the bearings wouldn't last longer than a few minutes. Sounds like you were victimized by the, "time is money, hurry the fuck up" automotive repair industry. But maybe it was something else, but probably not (personal opinion).

The damage was alrady done. The leaking intake manifold was the problem and not uncommon. Most GM dealerships would know this and would be looking for it. It would then "usually" be fixed for free under good will.

I guess you just cought it too late.

Yea the antifreeze would have gotten into the oil and ruined the bearings a while ago. I dont think that the mechanic was to blame for the failure. When they went and chaged the intake even if water did leak out into the oil they always change the oil after the job is done. Even if they didn't you still would have gotten quite a few mile out of it with some water in the oil.

I lost my intake gasket not too long ago. Should I be looking for another block or is there a chance it will survive? It sounds fine and i think I caught it a soon as it happened.

No the block will be ok. The bearngs take the abuse. If it overheated you may want to have it all checked for straightness.

Sorry I meant looking for a short block. No, the only time it got hot I shut down before it accually over heated, I'm careful with that because of the aluminum heads. It has been a while since and I haven't been pussy footin it either and it is still fine. I will admit I am not as bad as before but she seems to be all there.

It depends on the damage done. The crank material is MUCH harder than bearing material. So there may be no damage to the crank or even the cam for that matter and you may just get away with a bearing replacement.

But a complete tear down is the only way to know.
