  • High RPM

i was wondering how bad high rpm hurts this engine. (92' 3.1 MPFI) such as going though the gears with it floored. at a stoplight. the other day i beat a mid 90's mustang v6 manual at a stoplight he is one of my friends he was astounded...anyway my engine has 56k on it and i was just wondering how much abuse is too much i would say about once a month i really punch it maybe not floor it but enough to make it move. other than that i am a granny driver i am one of those people that takes forever to accelerate and if you were behind me you would get all pissed off at me. or how bout sustained high RPMs such as being at 100mph for like 20 miles... just looking for some feedback thanks.

I'd say most of us beat on our engines pretty hard quite a bit of the time - at least I do. They can take lots of punishment. Mine has 170k

ya they do take some abuse, i have mine up there all the time, granted i have some engine work done, i worked it hard before, and when i had my engine apart for the rebuild, everything was looking very good under there, and that was at 105000 miles. so they can take the abuse, as long as you treat it right with oil changes, etc...

I drove my mom's 92 Euro 3.1 Auto hard everyday for about a year, between 120,000mi and 130,000mi... It still runs nice... Actually now that I think about it the engine was replaced (not rebuilt) by the dealer at 70k before my parents bought it. The tranny is a little mushy, but the engine is great! They last a long time... I remember someone boasting about their engine lasting 300,000mi or something.

7000RPM is about the max for the stock rods. Valve springs will start floating beyond 6000.

3.1L's barley pull past 5000 anyway.

I say, you need to run 'em hard once in a while. Just for good measure.

I agree. My engine will see 5grand at least once in a trip.

My '87 Celeb Eurosport's 2.8L has 293,000KM (approx 185,000mi) on it now. And just last night I gave it another governor run down the highway (approx 5 miles) which I've done a couple times before. I had a SunFlower on my butt the whole way...what can I say?

I abuse my engines usually more than I should be able to get away with. Like I said, the 2.8 is at 293,000KM now, and I believe the last time I changed the oil was...hmm...I think it was when I put the car on the road to go to Wisconsin back in '01 at around 250,000KM. I'd like to change it now, and give the thing new plugs/wires (last done around the same time) but it's too frickin' cold out right now!

I agree that you should work 'em good once in a while, otherwise they might get used to granny driving, then choke (on the carbon and misc. buildup) when you need 'em to be there for ya. My 2.8 still runs as good as when I first got it around 220,000KM (~135,000mi), if not better. If the roads are anything more than slightly damp, I gotta go easy on the throttle so as not to just sit there spinning, and if I'm on 'er hard on dry ass-fault, when that 4T60 hit's second at 40mph, she will usually give a little chirp.

High rpm's aren't that bad for your engine but if its WOT and then you like insantly let off the throttle instead of slowly thats when rods can let go. don't get me wrong if you go playing around in the 5to 7 grand marks for a long time stuff can fail but the shock in the engine faces when abrubtly letting off the throttle can cause rod failure. i have never specificly herd of it being a problem for 60degreers. it is just engines in general can face this problem.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the engine starts coming apart at about 6400. Other than that, yes, stock 3.1s don't pull past 5,000. Mine has no problems, easily pulls past 6400, without boost as well.

GM says the rods are good for 7000RPM on the website. So long as all other components are balanced good with no un-usual vibrations you are safe.

Valve float will depend on how old and beat up your springs are. Even with Crane springs they say my valves will float at 6500RPM so that mean stockers woul be lower than that. I would say just beyond 6000 and they will float.

I keep a 6000 rpm chip in mine(it will pull past 6000). Reving my motor to 6000 while at a stop causes the whole truck to twist. (must have torque)
