  • clicking noise on cold start-ups

i hear this clicking noise when i start my car and it sounds as if it is a laud valve or something but one the engine warms up it goes away... i think this only happens on really cold starts... such as in the morning when it is around freezing outside...it clicks faster when the rpms go up. and on that note i also am wondering what the clicking noises are when you open up the hood when it is warm... i think it is the valves but correct me if im wrong... its not laud or anything.

If its going away once the engine warms up a bit its prolly just a lifter tapping. High frequency clicking could be injectors although they wouldnt be too loud. I dont think the injectors in my 3.1 make any noise that I can hear. My dohc had very loud injectors when the originals were in it which seems to be the norm for them, but the '97 dohc injectors in it now dont make a sound.

Does it sound like a sewing machine. Or an individual tick from a singal source?

There is a similar more severe issue that is fairly common. It's called a collapsed piston skirt. Basically it is when one of your pistons experiences some trauma that causes the side of it to bend in slightly. So when your car is cold you have some bad piston slap. But when the engine warms up it expands and fills the gap better and stops slapping.

          maybe?

when its warm and ou open the hood it sounds like a quiet sewing machine... but when it is cold... now it had been getting into the single digits here latly it sounds like tapping a wooden dowl on a piece of wood, no lauder, and it is consistant with the engine rpm till about 1200rpm and it stops... and its only for about the first min or two when the engine is running.

Man u better go get that engine checked...i was reading another thread and u were talking about how u raced a mustang...well the same thing happened to me..i raced a 93 300ZX TT and after that my car started making a loud sound like the one you are describing and a few miles later my engine threw a bearing..i had to buy a new short block...I think our engines are the exact same one i got a 95' GA SE with the 3.1(191c.i.)

No, you guys have different engines. 3.1Ls are know for a slight lifter tapping when cold. 3100s, like you have dont have near the lifter ticking due to the roller cam. And why were you racing a TT 300ZX??!??!

and at least i beat the mustang... ... ... i would have neverraced something like that maybe i would have egged him on at the stoplight with a few revs of the engine and beat him at launch but i would have never gave it my all... but a mustang <<<shudder>>> i dispise those machines and i pleased me greatly to woop his sorry a$$. it was at a walmart stoplight and there is about a quarter mile give or take a few tenths before the two lanes merged into one. i only cleared his front bumper by a foot or so but it was sweet victory... i was in 3rd for a few sec because for some reason 2nd gear goes up to about 50+ on my car.
