  • Ground problem?

I've got a 96 lumina car with a 3.1. I was driving today at highway speed and the car started to run really bad under load. It got worse and worse until it sputtered even when I gave it a little gas. Then all the sudden the car stalled, so I pulled over and it wouldn't re-start. It wouldn't crank very fast so I figured maybe my alternator went and my battery got run down. I came back to jump start it later and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to crank any faster. Finally I took the battery out of the car I drove there and put it in the broken down one, and still the same crank speed. I turned the head lights on and they seem to be regular brightness, but still a slow crank. I replaced the starter about a month ago. I checked the 2 cable grounds where they connect down near the starter and they look ok, are there other grounds I should check? Is there anything else that could make it act like this? I'm quite confused any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your power wire going to the starter. I would also check the ground wires on the back of the block on the bellhousing bolts.

I tried to manually ground the battery to the engine and it still didn't run, so I haven't ruled out a ground yet but I've been looking elsewhere. the starter has plenty of power at the wire, I was touching it with a pry bar and accidently grounded it to the engine, nice big spark. If I can get under it tomorrow I'll try and check the bell housing grounds. I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with my timing chain. I had a mechanic friend look at it and that was what he suggested might be wrong. I'm going to do a compression check on it tomorrow. Has anybody had their 3100 jump time or have a different problem with their timing chain before? And does anybody know if the 3100 is interference or not? Thanks for the help.

Well I did a compression check on the front 3 cylinders, they've all got nothing. I'm suspecting the timing chain, can anybody tell me how difficult it is?
