What I am going to try on my next free (weather permitting) day is to do the following (as suggested from Ben & Andy) :
For each rocker, have the lifter resting on the non-lobe (base) of cam; Tighten the rocker nut until the pushrod is unable to move up & down, but yet still able to turn the pushrod. Then at that moment for that rocker, turn the nut 1 1/2 more times.

      I'll see how it goes.

Sounds good. Your goal is just to remove play from the pushrod while the lifter is on the base of the cam. This is what we call ZERO lash. This means you have removed all play from the system but have not added PRELOAD. Preload is how far you depress the hydraulic pluger into the body of the lifter from its rest position on the wire locks. Once you are at the zero lash point it is now time to add preload to the lifter. On a Hydraulic lifter you want betweeen 0.020" and 0.060" of preload. With our studs this amount can be achieved with 3/4's of a turn.

I had a little time to work on the car today... I did as stated above and... When the car reached op temps, it would pop under load very bad and some at idle.... Now the lower intake has to come back off (another gasket).

No it does not. Leave it on and just remove the V covers. It makes it a little harder to get your fingers in but alot less reassembly work. I am guessing you set a valve when it was not on the base of the lobe.

Have you read Crane Cams website yet?

I had have done that. I was never good at setting valve lash. That's what made me buy these 1.6's, because it was a minor bolt & go. Guess not eh?

Yes I have read Crane Cams website.

I did not get anywhere with the rockers, but I did receive the t25 flange I've been wanting for my turbocharger...

I went out to the car today and hopefully accomplished something good. All I have to do is reattched the fuel lines, alt., power steering, rocker/valve covers.. etc.
I am leaving the rocker covers off until I feel everything is where it should be.
For the lock-nuts, I only gave them a 3/4 turn after zero lash.

wow, 1 1/2 turns I cant go much more than 1/4 turn before it starts holding the valve open, think its because of the stock genII head/springs mixed with the ironhead 2.8L block lifters??

                        It recommended a 1/2 turn to a full turn, not 1 & 1/2 turns.
