Ok I just got my hands on a 1989 firebird with the 2.8 auto. I am looking for a bit of info. I want more power but would like to do something other than just another boring V8 swap. Sooooo this brings me to the point of the engine is bone stock with 1500 miles since last rebuild, what knid of abuse can this engine take. From what I get the engine is strong, but I was thinking about using a set of TDO4 turbos from a Dodge Stealth 3.0L to boost the power. It comes down to it that I want to drive the car alot and would like to add the power, will the engine take it on stock internals? I can build the manifolds no problem. Also if I do that I am fairly sure the stock fuel system wont keep up but I am not for sure on it. Also the other main question I have is does anyone know what transmission is in this car or how to tell? I am an engine person, not much on transmissions. I am greatful for any and all help or suggestions.

Eninge internals wouldnt handle it
Transmission wouldnt handle it
The TGP (Turbo Grand Prix) has hardened gears in the trans. The engine block material was altered among other things...
Ive read the engines can take the Turbo, but only at lower PSI's...
Its easiest to do the V8 swap or just live with the V6. I have a 2.8 in a Beretta, which is mediocre. I would hate to drive a Firebird with one

You could always swap in a 3.8 from a newer Camaro and turbo it. Or get the 3400 from the 90s F-bodies and turbo it, it should bolt right up to the tranny. I dont know if the tranny would hold the power of just the 3400, non turbo, but some1 else might.

What does a 4T60 have to do with a RWD trans exactly? I don't know much about the RWD trans but id hope its stronger or has the ability to be upgraded as needed. Engine internals will take some boost but again, im not familiar with that turbo nor how it would work out on a 2.8. Bigger issue is tuning, not the engine taking the power. There is nothing special about the TGP block. Nothing special about the crank. As far as I can tell they do 1 thing different in the combustion chambers on the heads, and used mahle pistons.Ben
