  • 3400 bottom end swap

Anybody ever do this ? The only thing that really interests me about the 3400 swap is the increased torque. Couldn't I just get a low mile 3400 , use my existing (VIN M) top end and avoid the egr problem etc. ? What about compression ? Cam duration ?

Are the two crank sensors and the cam sensor in the same places on a 3400 block ? This seems to me to be a bit easier than monkeying with egr adapters and what not. Opinions ?

The VIN M 3100 heads flow well enough for "normal" RPM range with a 3400 don't they ? Would I need to do any tuning (can't do it myself) ?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Refresh my memory VIN "M"?

If you're 3100 is a '96+ the EGR will not need an adaptor.

If your 3100 is '96 to '99 use a '96 to '99 UIM, or if you use an '00+ UIM, get the '00+ EGR, it will plug right in.

Now if the VIN "M" is '94 or 5, then yes you will have to use/make an adaptor, but the gains are well worth it.

I think an adapter would be MUCH cheaper and easier than cobbling together two engines. I'd say swap in the whole 3400, then get a machine shop to make you an adapter if you don't have the resources to make your own. You'd end up with a more powerful AND more reliable engine that way.

I own a 3100 VIN M engine (1994), and a 3100 VIN J engine (2001). I've never seen an adapter or had reason to make one, but I've had the EGR off both these engines when doing the LIM gasket job... and I don't think an adapter would be all that hard to make. A little flatbar, a welder, a drill press, and some creativity would do the trick. Better still, find a local machine shop that can make one from aluminum stock.

You'd be better off x10 just swapping the whole motor.
