  • Why cant 60 degree V-6 Engines take abuse?

I have a 95 grand am 191 c.i. and everytime i abuse it a little something breaks..i was spinning cookies in an empty parking lot and my power steering pump went out..then the other day i got it up to about 100 m.p.h. and the engine went Cabooom!!R.I.P.

Not sure why this is in the DOHC section, but maybe you shouldnt do donuts. Havnig the power steering pump break reallly isnt the motor at all. Donuts are not good on FWD autos. And these cars werent made to see 100+mph very often

I somehow doubt it blew up because you went 100 mph. Given that you were doing doughnuts with a FWD car enough to break the PS pump...Id have to say it was more than abuse.

Yeah, this isn't dohc, do you know what engine you used to have? Maybe liteglow will fix your engine. haha

Um, they can take abuse... or as I call it, enthusiast driving. I run the hell outta my Sunbird's 3.1... it's almost like it has two throttle positions!

I agree, I have blown up just about every 4 cyl I've owned, Honda (One of the few known to blow up), and GM 2.0L OHV and OHC, but these 660s will take my abuse, I tried to blow up the gen1 660 in my truck, overheating it, "forgetting" about oil changes, and it still ran almost perfect the day I pulled it out, the carb was the reason it didn't run perfect. I also had a 3.1 that I dropped in my Skyhawk, I abused that like they are a dime a dozen, I ended up selling to a guy and he finally took out the head gasket after spraying nitrous through it several times.

I drive my hybrid like Ridge drives his, two throttle posions, Idle and full throttle, ok well not really, but it seems that way sometimes.

Ive beaten the hell out of a few 60vs in my day, the only one ive lost is my 3100 which ran around boosted for about 6months and then blew up due to an oil leak. Upon inspecting the heads and cylinders a week earlier everything was perfect inside even with boost.

They are tough as nails however you do get some bad ones here and there, and if you punish it without taking good care of it at the same time your looking for trouble.

I think that I am harder on my 3100 than any other car that I have ever owned. I have never felt that the car was going to die, or break on me. It has been nothing but reliable (except for the times that it got messed up due to human error..... *raises hand* Guilty as charged).

I have abused my engine plenty, and yet it is still running strong. Collapsed lifters, broken pushrod guides, negleted oil changes... still runs like a frickin mule!

If you wana play hard you gotta wrench hard.

The reason your engine probabally blew is because it was a beater to begin with and you just pushed it over the edge.

Power steering pump probably went b/c you were holding the wheel all the way and it was already cut all the way. As for the 100 mph bit... I hit 100 at least once every time I drive to and from college, I have no problems from mine.
