  • What does a snapped 3500 rod look like?

I'd say it looks something like this...

Picked up a couple 3500 short blocks, as well as 97/8 4.3L Vortec for a steal. These are the same 3500s that onefastV6 got all his top end parts from. Anyway, the 3500 snaped a rod and sent it through the pan. I haven't gotten too far into it yet, but it doesn't look too bad yet. We will see...

Your lucky I was not able to be home at the time the auction was ending. I was planning on scooping that block up at the last second of the auction...

Well, you can fight Marty for the other one. I'd be happy to take highest bidder.. .

Might as well show a couple pics of that beauty as well (snapped timing chain, 05 Uplander).

I swear, this thing looks almost brand new. Gonna check alittle later to see if I can't tell how much use this thing actually had. All I know is that its pretty damn clean. Block doesn't even appear to have gotten dirty yet! And yet I'm letting Marty take this one versus the other one... Man, I am a nice friend!

Well, here is all of the damage to the block that I can see... Looks like the pan to the majority of the damage (its got a big hole inside it. ).

To see the rest of the pics I have taken so far...

Damn! That is outrageous. If I had known that, I would have tried shipping with somebody besides UPS. I will probbaly try to use the stock 3500 bottom end...not 100% sure just yet.

Well, I guess I hadn't paid attention to the other rods when I took it all apart...

That's the rod on the same journal as the snapped one...

And while I was at it, decided to see just how hard it would be to pry off the new crank trigger. It's not that hard at all!

By looking at the way it was done, I bet it would be pretty easy to design and make something similar for just about anything... A old-style 7-notch trigger, a 60 tooth for an electromotive, etc... As long as the block will access the different pickups, I think the possibilities might be endless!

Guess I know what my next CAD project is.

I have the pushrods from that engine and there were a few bent ones and bent valve. I wonder if the thing hydrolocked or what the hell happened. The bottom of the heads do not appear to have any piston contact.

And then the boat anchor, err.. I mean, 4.3L Vortec I also picked up with the 2 3500s...

Looks like it was hydro-locked. There is no real way an engine can do that to two connecting rods without some help. Having said that, the one rod seemed to handle it pretty well.
