  • Possible 3100 for me...

Dad just sold the '98 Lumina with busted cam for $100 (too cheap, but it's his car...) and said the buyer will bring the dead engine back since dad got the idea of possibly rebuilding it for my tired old car.

When we get it on a stand, I'm gonna tear it down and see how bad it is. If it's not totally ruined, I'll probably set to work (slowly, as is my usual pace with anything) rebuilding it (and possibly tweaking it a bit in the process) to replace the old 3.1 that's currently at 225,000 miles in my old Sunbird. Might see if I can find a lower mileage or recently rebuilt transaxle too just for peace of mind (do these fail under normal use aside from worn synchros? It doesn't shift as nicely as it used to, possibly cables tho). Hopefully this will allow the car to last me another few years, since I'm considering graduate school and thus wouldn't be able to buy another car until late 2007 or early 2008

Other problems with the old bird are that the two right side wheels are bent (Beretta GTU 16x7), the springs are shot (need eibachs), and the headliner is falling. Oh, and there's some nasty black poplar sap all over it. I guess I should wash it. :P

100 bucks for the whole car! Damn, why didnt he just give you that car? Probably cheaper to just get a low milage motor and drop it in unless you think the other motor can get away with bearings and a cam.

I think he's crazy for letting it go for that too, but he's already told the guy he'll take the $100 for it. He's convinced it's just a pile of junk, even tho it's a fairly clean 150k mile car otherwise. I can't imagine what he'd do if presented with dealing with a 225k mile clunktastic beast like my 'bird. Probably shove it off into the woods and let it rust away.

As to what that 3100 needs... I'm hoping it's just bearings and cam, but I fear it'll have a bent valve or two. As long as the whole of the parts isn't more than a few hundred, I'm fine with fixing up this engine. Even if there are bent valves, that can't be too expensive. I had a pair of 327 heads redone in '97 or so for a grand total of $95 (planing, replacing a few valves, guides, springs, thorough cleaning and magnafluxing).

the getrag 282 is a solid tranny. basicly if you run the right oil in them, they last a long time. unless its popping out of gear or grinding (other than reverse) dont bother opening it up.
