        Holy Old post batman!!

        since its back from the dead and i never saw the continued questions: Yeah Box end wrench. Not a socket for that lower bolt.

          I've changed mine twice on my '94 ga, and you can get the bottom bolt with a 12 point boxed end to break it loose and use the open end to remove it. you can do it, one of those new gear ratchet open end wrenchs might be the easiest.. I only pulled the wires from the egr, iac, and tps. took about an hour.

                      I personally love the gm60 v6 design, if you cant do a thermostat you need to buy real tools and/or need practice, have your hand at working on some euro cars, then you will see what soulless men build
