  • Moms Lumina just took a big shit on me.

Moms '98 Lumina has likely met the end of the road at just past 150k miles.

My Sunbird has been acting up and my Nissan desperately needs front wheel bearings, so I'd borrowed my moms Lumina that they still haven't gotten around to selling since mom got an S10.

It'd been way too long since it had an oil change, so my dad changed it right before we all went to the outer banks for Thanksgiving. I took it from the OBX back up here to Cullowhee.

Noticed a couple days ago the oil light came on. Shut it off, restarted. Noticed it would come on at idle when the motor was hot. Shrugged it off as a worn pump, bad sensor, or something of the sort. Hadn't seen it since.

Today, I was almost back to my place after some errands and noticed what sounded like lifter noise. Didn't go but 100 yards or so before it started shaking and that stupid oil light came back. I shut it off and rolled up into my parking spot. Tried to re-crank, it's hosed - turns over unevenly (as if not all cylinders have compression) and once it tries to run, it's making a bad clacking noise.

Was talking to people in IRC about it, the suggestion of a broken cam was brought up. Entirely possible, fits the symptoms and it's not the first oiling problem the car had - it popped an intake manifold gasket maybe 6-12 months ago.

Not sure what the parents are going to do with it, I'm guessing they'll get rid of it as-is.

*Note to self* Never let Jon near my vehicles.

    A broken cam, eh?

Is there ANY oil pressure? If there is, you can rule out the broken cam theory.

The way my luck has been lately, I really should avoid motor vehicles for a while.

When the problem first occured, the oil pressure light did come on. That and the godawful shaking is why I switched it off. When I tried to restart it, I did not let it "run" (more like shake, wiggle, and make racket) long enough for the idiot lights to go out.

Hmm, well I would start by veryifying a lack of oil pressure then go from there.

did the engine ingest a lot of coolant when the gasket failed?

It ingested enough to make the oil look like coffee with a fair amount of creamer.

Sounds like the engine could have dropped a rod or about to. Take the heads off, you may need more work than you think.

                    Sure enough, cam is broken.

Or so that's what removing the valvecover indicates. Turn it over, the first three rockers move, the last three do not. Dad still hasn't decided for sure what he's going to do with it. It's about a week and a half til I go home, he may do something about it then.

If you have the time, you could get a 3100 for pretty cheap with lower than 150k on it. Throw that in and call it a day.
