cam/camshaft sensor compatability

Let me start off by saying this is a great website. A lot of good information.

I am planning on putting in a newer 3400 to replace my knocking '98 3400. I want to go with a '00-04 3400. I am concerned about the cam sync ring on the cam because they changed in 00 and then again in 03. Will the right signal be sent to the ECM? Should/can I use a 98 camshaft? Has anyone done this before? Thanks.

Swap the engine in, and plug it in, hit the key, enjoy.
