  • newer gen 3 3100 in a 2000 malibu

can a 2003 3100 be dropped in the 2000 malibu already with the 3100 without computer reprogramming or other problems? i need to do the swap because the car can't be down for more than a weekend and i know that i need to tear apart the lower end and do some work. more than can be done the right way in one weekend. please answer only if you know for sure whether this can be done without computer or other compatibility problems.

I have a 02 3400 mounted in a 94 Beretta with the stock PCM, so the answer would be yes. If anything, just to be on the same side, swap the old sensors into the new engine. You'd probably be better off getting a 3400 instead though. A little bit more power for probably the exact same price.

      QFT!

The only sensor that I've read that needs to be changed, though never verified that in fact needed to be swapped was the cam position sensor. I don't believe that it needs to be though. And unless Brad (above) swapped it, I know the sensors are "supposed" to be different between the years that go along with the cam reluctor ring change, which were definatly different between '94 and '00, I believe there was another change in '03.

But in reality, the newer engine will drop in, in place of your '00, with no problems, there were no major changes between those years.
