Just curious if there's any reason to get one like the Melling pump (MEL-M134HV). Or is stock adequate for anything we throw at these engines? The only reason I see is for those running the underdrive pulleys to help maintain good oil flow.

RE: High-Volume Oil Pumps
the pullys have nothing to do with the oil pump. the oil pump is driven off the camshaft.
in a performance build up, its worth the money. gen 1 and 2 motors are known for oiling issues, ive heard a lot of pumps failing. i wouldnt trust a stock pump if i was dumping a bunch of money into the motor.
i run that mellings pump in my motor. 75psi when cold at idle, hot idle is about 35psi and low rpm its around 60psi. when i stand on it it heads right up to 75 when its hot. thats with 10w40 oil.

If you run a 3.4L or equivalent pump you will be fine for everything. They flow 20% more than the old 2.8L/3.1L pumps and have a bigger pickup. I would asume the Melling is of similar or slightly larger size.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

I ran a GM Performance Parts HV oil pump on my first original 3.1L build. Sucked the pan dry and spun a camshaft bearing.
If you put in a HV pump. Increase the pan capasity to hold more oil.
On a normal street motor, typical normal mods its not needed at all.
I've used stock flow ever since.Colin

I wont run a high volume on a stock pan , no way. You will suck the pan dry. I even built my blown v8 with a stock oil pump.
High volume pumps have there place , and they were spawned and really popular , but nowadays we have full synthetic motor oils and special coated bearing surfaces.
A high volume is a stock pump with loneger gears and more parastaic loses.
A high pressure is a stock unit with a stiffer pressure spring.1992 Chevrolet S10
