  • Crank differences, 2.8 to present day

In order for me to list the different crank scrapers, i need to know wtf the wheel with notches in it is called. I have 2 scrapers for the 2.8, one with cog and one without (as it states in pen on the scrapers, to which I think its the internally balanced vs externally, or how the timing thing is setup. I honestly don't know because I have the 3.1 scraper as well which I wasn't aware ever came in a different setup than the FWD crank. Perhaps the 2 years it was used as a RWD crank it was setup differently?

ANyway, I tested the 3.1 w/ cog (again, wtf is cog) on a 3400 with the windage tray in place and its a perfect setup. I want to add these to the store but I need to know what application these differences really matter for. Ive got the FWD 3.1/3100/3400 crank scraper all figured out but the rwd and externally balanced motors I have no clue on.

Also, shipping is gonna suck cause its only UPS and I dunno how I will get rid of the USPS option for just the scrapers on the store. I really hate oscommerce sometimes.

i thought it was a "reluctor wheel" or a timing "disc"

hmm, reluctor wheel is probably it. Ill accept more guesses though:P Im about to post up some pics of the scraper on a 3400 in the store section of the forum.

Yes it is called a reluctor wheel and came on every single crank that was internally balanced. Whether it was used with the crank sensor and had notches cut into it depended on the injection system... For instance TBI never used it but all MPFI and SFI systems did.

External balance cranks did not have the wheel.

            no 3.1l external balanced.

all 660 motors were externaly balanced 87 and prior, and all were internal balanced 88+, doesnt matter if it was rwd, fwd, or what. now as for reluctor wheels, all 86 and prior motors didnt have them (all then were 2.8l), 87+ fwd all had them (2.8, 3.1 excluding apv/transport, 3100, 3400, ect). as for rwd, the only one that ever had a reluctor wheel was the 3.4l f-body motor (93-95).

the rule- if it had DIS, it had a reluctor wheel, if it had a distributor, it didnt.

              Not true
ALL INTERNAL BALANCE cranks had a reluctor wheel regardless of application, this includes any RWD vehicle that may have had a distributor and were internal balance. The wheel gave the crank the needed mass to be internal balanced.

Ok. so I can just list internally balanced 2.8, externally balanced 2.8, all 3.1, all 3.4 DOHC, all 3100, and all 3400. I have no idea why I have an externally balanced 3.1 crank scraper here then, but I didnt test fit it as the other one was setup really nice for the 3400.
