  • Temp. sending unit

Well I just got done installing my spare 3.1L into my retta with a little tune up on it. I got all the wiring hooked up, cooling stuff, etc except for the temperature sensor on the back cylinder head next to the egr valve. For whatever reason I can't find the pigtail for it on the harness. The wierdist part was that when I start up the engine I am getting no SES lights, and I am still getting the correct temp reading from the temp unit by the thermostat, fan kicks on blah blah blah. Car is a 1990 indy beretta with a digi dash, and I had always heard that you won't get a temp reading if you don't have both units hooked up. Sry if this is something so stupid I overlooked but any input would be appreciated.

    RE: Temp. sending unit

Normally (although not sure with the digital dash), the temp sensor in the rear head is for the gauge. The ECM uses the temp sensor located near the thermostat. With the digital dash, it may get the values from the ECM, hence the reason you are still seeing the temp on the dash. That is just an idea, though... As I said, the ECM functions off of the temp sensor by the thermostat, so not having it plugged in isn't affecting how the engine is running.

Makes perfect sense though, and maybe why I can't find a pigtail for the other temp sensor. Perhaps the engiens of the cars with digi dashes just had that port capped off?

on the digital dash i believe it is only for a warning light.. could be wrong on that though..

well other then a leaky water pump gasket, loose hose clamp, and a blown hose all is well lol. The ECM started to relearn the idle. For a while my grandfather came out and said it sounded like I put a hot cam in. Anyhow anyone else have a problem with those quick disconnect hose fittings that plug in right below the temp sending unit? This is what I had fail on me even though I swear I had it in correctly.
