  • lookin for 3400 info

heres the deal, i got a 95 grandam with the 3100sfi v6, however...its dead. and i want to make it fast...really fast...it is a project vehicle afterall

planning on a 3400 swap. whats the best vehicle to search for a 3400 off of? i heard the van engines had 5more HP from a different exhaust manifold?

ill probably be looking for them thru car-parts.com or a local auto store that can order it, one place said they could get a 3100 fro $500, and $550 to install it...sure they could get a 3400 for around $500...not sure how much they'd charge to swap it in...if they'd even do it.

anyone know if a regular shop would swap a 3400 into it, if i give them the 3400swap guide? i'd do it myself but my parents said i couldn't do it in there driveway, and i live in an apartment complex and don't have a garage to work in.

well thats my novel....best vehicle to source a 3400 out of, and if a shop would swap it into my 95 grandam that started with a 3100sfi v6 if given the guide?

    RE: lookin for 3400 info

Well before you go jumping in to this remember this. It's going to be hard to make the car fast. It can be quick but any car takes a good amount of money to be fast. I've got about every top end part imaginable on my 3400 yet still only would probably run low 14's to high 13's. Now for the shop. Any good shop should be able to do it, just be sure to research. Don't worry about getting the specific kind of an engine from a certain vehicle. If you're trying to make it fast you'll be replacing any of the parts that gave it the extra 5hp.

im aware it takes money, and that aftermarket parts aren't everywhere like other cars...and even when i DO find parts for this car...they are 4x's as much as other cars...AED Central...$465 for tail lights, $1800 for a bodykit/spoiler...crazy expensive...i'll stick with stock.

my friend owns a car shop that does crazy shit to cars....top end cars though...i think if i had him swap the engine in my grandam..it'd be the cheapest car he's ever done...ten fold, lol.

i was thinking of the 3400 swap, than a vortech supercharger around 8psi. just not sure if the transmission can take that. i'd swap in a 5spd but im not sure if any 5spd's could take that either..if any bolt up.

than its the cv joints, and axles...im sure i'll twist the shit out of those. but its ok...cuz its a project car and thats part of the fun

If you get the 3400 or even a newer 3100 (2000+) you'll get more power, and it should be practically a drop in deal. Most shops are not going to want to mess with that kind of a swap due to the fact that there are electronics involved. Trust me, i've tried. They tuck their tail between their legs and take off. So if you've got a friend that does that kind of work, then I'd take it there. He'll probalby cut you a special deal anyways.

It most certainly sure can. www.rsmracing.com has a supercharger kit for the 3400 motors. Add about 1000 bucks for the stage II upgrade.

You can also run the older 282 5spd that came with the early 90's Cavaliers, and Berettas and such. Or the Isuzu MK7, or the new Getrag that's on the 2.2L OHV cavaliers. Providing that you use the flywheel and clutch for the appropriate tranny. Problem is that your ECU is programmed for an electronic automatic transmission. If you pop a 5spd in there with that ECU, it's not gonna like not reading a 4spd auto tranny. So it'll freak out, turn on everyone's favorite orange light, and go to 'limp mode'. So if you swap to a 5spd you'll have to change the ECU too.

Or you could just hunt some more junk yards and find yourself a direct replacement for what you have in there now, and just go from there.

eh, not gonna spend $4.5k on a setup i can peice together for less than 1/3 the price.

thanks for showing me that page though, def some stuff on there ill have to look into. thinking of just going witha nother 3100. just have teh shop do it for there $1k they are gonna charge me, since i have no place to work on it

that way i can have it be my daily instead of my 17mpg Silverado...than i can sell it...or lift it with some good ole mud tires.

Drooping in a 3400 is no harder that swapping in a different 3100. Only (major) difference is the EGR. Your '95 uses a "Digital EGR" While all 3400s use/d a "Linear EGR". There are adaptor plates available for this, or you can make your own. Just make sure you know what year 3400 you are getting first, since there was an EGR flange change in the 2000 model year.

Boosting these cars is a headache but doable. The ECU isn't reprogrammable so you're stuck using piggyback systems or doing an ECU/wiring harness swap. The 4T60E tranny you'll have isn't too bad (280 lbs ft torque max) but the diff is known to shatter on boosted cars. You can help prevent this by getting engineered.net's LSD.

If you go with a newer 3100 (99+) you'll need to do the same things to get it to drop in as the 3400. But if you go with the older 3100 (94-9 you can always steal the heads/intake manifolds/throttlebody from a newer 3100/3400 for more power later on.

The 4T65E's diff works as well doesnt it? I know on the 440t4 (same as 4t60 with no electronics) it will either not shift at redline, or retard the timing really far so it doesnt slam on the diff during shifts and break it.
