  • Power steering pump, 32 flavors...

now that i have the belt on my motor and everything is going smootly, its time to replace the PS pressure line. the old pump goes to a '91 GP, and the line i bought was for an '87 Z, why did they change things? So i went to carparts.com to see if part numbers match up, they list the same # for the hose from the pump, fro a 91 and 87 Z, but its different for the GP. And the pumps, wow, there's a variaty there. listed 3 pumps for the 87 z, 2 for the 91, and the GP had a couple as well, all with different PN's.

so do i spend the money on a z24 PS pump...take my line back and get a GP line... :wtf1:

i guess i'll just get a line, worse case it probably too long, or doesnt fit on the other end,i'll just keep it, when the actuall swap takes place i'll fit the line to the car, and get a pump, a 75$ pump.

      Seriously, i dont understand...

what the heck is going on? i guess something else changed in the lineup. when the 2.8 became a 3.1 did they change the timing cover? or is it just that the timing cover is different between W and J bodies? i bought an 87 z24 PS pump and the resivior hits the the hoisting eye by the alternator. and the line i got is still too big for the pump. so now i have to be an ass and take both parts back, and figure out what is going on. i think maybe i got the wrong PS line in the first place, so now im a little irritated. the first pump they got in i couldnt have because it was someone elses core, and they finaly got it right, and now it doesnt fit.

So i just really need a damn line from the pump, how many lines are there? does the one from the pump not go straight to the rack, or does it just connect to another line that goes the rest of they way? i dont have my car here, its in storage.

just eliminate power steering, it's a power parasite anyway and obscures road feel to boot

i thought about it, but i have 16" wheels with 225/50's, thats biggest that fit. power isnt required, but its nice. otherwise i'd have to come up with an idler, and i dont feel like it. not for this one anyways.

Ah, wasn't aware you added to the wheels. I know my fiero is no problem without power steering, but it doesn't have a nice beefy engine sitting on top of the front axle. Driving the vette with its 17"'s or the volvo with wheels and tires about the same size, they feel nearly as heavy as the fiero does and they both have power steering.

I know the timing covers changed somewhat over the years, but if I remember my reading correctly, there are only 3 basic designs. There was the kind used on the early FWD motors, the kind used on S-10 trucks, and the late FWD motors. The late FWD motors had an offset water pump I think while the S-10 cover can fit over the late FWD motors. The early FWD style cover won't swap on due to oil pan differences. There might be more, but that's all I remember off the top of my head from when I went shopping for them about a year ago.

Can't help you with the 660 PS pump though considering I've never had one.

since the old pump should work, it fits, and it worked when the motor was yanked from the donor. im going to use it, and the local KOI got in a few lines for me, so we can find the right one. i think the problem should be solved shortly. thanks anyways.

i need a part number for a line, help please!

we figured it out, im chasing a leprechuan. the koi doesnt show it but i need a 2 peice line, they cant get them both, just the one they already have, from the rack/gear to the line i need. so know i get to bother the retards at the parts dept in the local chevy dealer, since they dont seem to know much, or are helpfull, or want to help for that matter, can anyone get me a PN? i need the line from the pump, to the pressure line.

seriously guys, i need some help with this

ok, i got my pump on, and i got the line i need, i think. how does this line route an J bodies? from what i can tell, it does not go down the front of the timing cover, and not over the alternator, does it go around behind the alternator? i havent been able to find a good pic of this anywhere, and since i got the motor from a W and never actually worked on a car having a gen 2 in it, im kinda lost. c'mon guys, this is my last major hurdle in the way of victory. other wise i have to steer my fat 225's manualy with a 14" steering wheel.

PS, 3.1 Z24 guys! "throw me a friggin' bone here!"

ok, that line is routed to my satisfaction. i called a dealer for the correct resivior, its like $79! GMPD says $45 before i waste more cash running in circles, i just want to confirm some stuff, dont be afraid to answer if you know.

                    1. i have the line routed between the alternator and the intake coming out under the back of the plenum where the MAP sensor is, is that correct?

                    2. the z24's have a power steering cooler, if have a Z you probably know this. is the line from the cooler to the pump mounted resivior routed alongside the output line from the pump?
