balancers and flywheels

im looking for some bits for my motor im building (86 2.8l H.O. ironhead going into my 86 cavalier). im told all balancers are the same for the 660, and that they are all neutral balanced. can anyone confirm this??? im having trouble finding a pre 88 motor (external balanced) to get a balancer off of. will a balancer from a later model work??? what about a rwd balancer, is it the same as a fwd???

flywheels, again, are fwd the same as rwd??? i know that pre 88 are counterweighted (for external balanced), but im having one hell of a time tracking down a fwd pre 88 flywheel, but i have found lots of rwd pre 88s.

Yes, all balancers are neutral balance. I have a couple '84 2.8's, and they are both neutral. I think all gen-1 balancers are the same, but gen2/3 have the balacer/pulley as one unit, so they are different. I'm not sure about late-gen1 Cav engines, when they switched to the serpentine belt setup the balancer might have changed. I have only looked at 1 RWD balancer, but I think it is the same as the FWD's.

I have a pre-'88 counterweighted flywheel if you need it. Would probably need to be re-surfaced. I also have a gen1 balancer off a 2.8 X-11 engine that has low miles. I bought it new in '99 from GM, and it has maybe 15K miles on it. I have another one that has 180K on it, but you probably don't want that :-)

The RWD balancers are different than FWD. They have a different bolt pattern for the pulley, than the FWD (where you attach the puller on the FWD), they also do not have the belt grooves.
