  • Gen 3 timign chain on gen 1 motor?

I was thinking of getting a Gen 3 roller cam( I understand they have aftermarket cams now) for my aluminum block build and from what I know the timing gears for a gen 3 are single bolt holding it to the cam instead of 3 bolts like in a flat tappet hyd stock cam

My question is, think the gen 3 timing chain is the same size as a gen 1? Like will a gen 3 chain fit under a FIero timing cover?

I dont'have a gen 3 chain here so I dont' know if the chain is wider then a gen 1 chain which could cause clearence issues. I am also not sure if GM changed anything in the timing chains.

    Thanks

    Shaun

You're using this in a Gen I block though correct? Because from what I've read, there isn't enough oiling in a Gen I block to be able to use a roller cam, unless you modify it somehow. Thats just how I understand it...

He's using the BowTie block, so the oiling abilities are there...

are you using the bowtie block or are you useing that prototype aluminum block that you had??? if your using the prototype, the oiling capabilities arent there. to run a hydralic roller, it has to have priority main oil feed.

There are no aftermarket genIII cams available, yet, AFAIK they are still in development.

The genII and genIII timing chains are narrower than the genI chain.

I believe it had a center oil galley in the lifter area. If I read all the talk about it correctly.

I am using the bowtie block.

I dotn' remember if the prototype had priotiry main feed or not. It was never actually in my possession. My buddy picked it up for me and took it back to his place since he was closer to it.

You can use a roller cam wtih a gen 1 or 2 block. Curtis Walker is doing it. its a mechanical roller, and as far as I know I think he said he had to use a special set of rollers on one side of the block to keep them from seizing up from lack of oil. Ask him to get a straight answer but it can be done in a non gen 3 block.

I read on Grandamgt.com that a aftermarket roller cam is now available. Thats what I read. From what I understand it is a new cam and not regrinds. Some guy Named Milzy.

Maybe I read it wrong who knows. I am too lazy to go back and check right now.

But thanks for the replies. It answers my question. I just want to make sure I can use a gen 3 chain with my fiero gen 1 timing cover.

                Looking good for me

Don't forget about the gen3 cam retaining plate. The gen1/2 block does not have the provisions to mount this plate. You would need to use a spring-loaded cam button or some other method to retain the cam in the block. I'm not sure if this would work using just the gen3 cam and gen3 timing set..I think the gen3 cam sprocket is designed to ride against the plate. The cam button may push the cam/sprocket too deep into the block.

Here are some pictures showing the front of the blocks (the top picture shows a gen3 block with a gen2 cam installed):

Actually Chris they are for sale. Milzy's cams for those who put $$ deposit down are now getting their camshafts as we speak, His cams are ready to go. So there is now Gen3 roller cams for sale.

3X3 from GAGT also has just had the blanks finished, they are just working on the profiles right now as well to get these out the door asap. I believe COMP is going to be cutting the blanks for them.

Yeah Solid Roller Lifters can be done on Gen1 and 2's we know that. But are you not refering to a Hydraulic roller setup?

The production Bowtie as stated has the oiling setup for the hydraulic setup. I thought some other guy on here bought that Prototype block? or was that you? Thought the prototype block only had stock gen1 oiling system though. which would mean cant do a hydraulic roller setup.

Gen 1 chains are thicker yet they can fit behind a gen 2-3 front cover. Also the Gen3 chain became thinner in '00, but the mating sprocket has more teeth. GEN2 and GEN 3 to '99 used the same timing chain.
