  • HELLLPPP!! Strange problems

    Hey everyone,
Welp, my '87 jimmy w/ a 2.8 throttlebocrap has developed a strange imtermittent problem. When the problem is happening the belt sqeals quite loudly and the truck has beyond no power and you have to very rapidly and repeatedly pump the gas just to keep the damn thing running!! If you just pump the gas once it will surge like a carb accel pump dumping fuel then go back to pissin an sputtering! I have felt all the pulleys and none were even warm so I dont "think" any of the pumps or pulleys are going bad. Now, the truck will backfire a bit and sound a little raggity but then the exhaust has a known leak and is usually ignored. I am thinking of dumping some denatured achohall into the gas and see if that will clean the fuel system and injectors.
Any ideas anyone? I REALLY need the truck back in action so please any help.... well you get the idea.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeremiah
Sorry for the bad typing but its late and I've had a bad day and at this point gammar isnt exactly high on my list of concerns.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

Does this thing have AC with a seized pump perhaps? If in defrost mode the pump will cycle and if the pump is seized it may be the cause. Something must be making the belt squeel.

Well, the A/C pump is still there but is not wired up (the poor throttlebocrap 2.8 cant even pull that load on its BEST day) so I am not thinking along those lines, plus a few weeks ago I turned the a/c clutch by hand for giggles and grins. A couple of things I happened to think of after I posted (not sure if they have anything to do with anything but I'll throw it out anyways). One, the wiring in the dash is more or less shot. There is a short in the wires that cant be traced but it cuases the gauges to go erratic and the radio to flicker on and off. Only way to fix this (and its a sometimes fix) is to smack or kick the DTC terminal. Also, a while back my Dad and I did some off-roading on a freshly cut logging road and knock something loose with the tranny. I think the lines came loose a bit but anyways we have to constantly keep adding tranny fluid. Oh, and once I noticed the vacuem lines at the tranny where a bit old but couldnt be reached for replacement.
Does this help in the diagnoses?
      Thanks again,
      Jeremiah

Duht, forgot to mention also the smog pump pulley has been completely removed so theres another source of belt squeal eliminated.

Wow that a weird problem. What I would start with is removing the belt and pushing the pullies in and out and then left, right, up, down. Try and see if any have play. Excess play will indicate worn bearings.

Ok, I will try that, but I also need help figuring out why the hell it doesnt have any power and wants to die unless the throttle is pumped?

It could be that whatever is making the belt squeek is trying to stall the engine from excessive drag.

Well, I took the belt off and found the power steering pulley to be a little loose but all the other pulleys where tight. So I looked into the res. and it was dry so I added fluid and the problem "seemed" to go away. Yes, everything was fine for the initial test drive. Then, several hours later, I jumped in and fired it up and guess what??? The problems bbbaaaacckkk!!! This is getting reallly fucking annoying!!!!! I now think that whatever the true problem is is cuasing the belt to squeal. So any other ideas? Tomorrow I plan on pulling the plugs and seeing what they can tell me.

                  Umm...

Problem came back? Is there anything in the PS reservoir now?
PS pump leak? Leak at the rack? Sounds like it.

Yes, The problem came back. I added fluid and then it SEEMED to run Ok for the rest of the day. The next day it was up to BS again. So, I pulled the plugs and found they were gapped WAY out. Closed them and again it seemed to run OK for awhile. I am now thinking a thorough tune up and fuel system cleaning will do it good. Right now the biggest concern is changing the fucking starter. Any suggestions? It looks like I may have to pull the pass. exhaust manifold to get it out!

I can pull my starter on my '84 carb'd 2.8 OK. I think I moved it forward and turned it straight up and dropped it out. Expect to have to shim it. I pulled a starter on another donor truck that was "tweaked" from an offroad adventure and it would not clear the engine.

Well, I pulled the manifold and got it out. It was "relatively" easy and I use that term very loosely. I really didnt see any other choice. But anyways, I got it out and now its back in with a new used X-11 siloniod. So far its running OK bbut I know the tune-up is still needed.

OK for anyone thats following this, it appears the true problem is a bad fuel pump!!
