Recently I purchased a 1991 Beretta, with a 3.1 that didn't run. The kid I bought it from put a new camshaft in (a crane 2030). According to him, the reason the car dosen't run is because the timing is off. When we got the car home, it rolled over, but would flood itself, so we know its getting fuel. We also checked for spark, its getting good spark. I pulled the timing chain cover off and aligned the timing marks. Now, the number one piston isn't at TDC when the marks are aligned, you have to rotate the crank roughly half a rotation for it to be at TDC. Is this correct or do I have other problems to deal with. Any input is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking it would be easiest to start over with the timing.

If the timing marks are lined up, then you should be fine. I can't remember, but the #1 cylinder may not need to be at TDC for the timing marks to align. The sproket on the crank is keyed, so that can't change (unless the crank is broken) and the sproket on the cam also has an aligning button, so it can only go on in 1 position. Therefore, if the timing marks align, everything should be good to go.-Brad-

bszopi is right if the marks align it cannot be off. Have you made sure that all the plug wires are correct? Dont just check if the number 1 on the coil pack goes to the number 1 cylinder. He may have the coil packs in the wrong location. You should be able to find a diagram on this site which shows what terminals go to what plugs.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

I'd check to see if the fuel rail wiring isn't grounded out. Its very easy to pinch a wire and ground out the whole rail....If that is true I'd check the engine oil as well. I'd check this after dealing with the ignition of course...Lorenzo
