  • 3100 Rebuild component questions

Anyone who has done a rebuild what type and brand of bearings (cam, rod, main) did you use?

I am going to try and use moly rings if I can find some.

Anyone had any experiance with sealed power and perfect circle products?

    Thanks.

No they are not. They are called friction bearings. Not frictonless. There are anti friction bearings but they are either roller, ball or needle bearings. Friction bearings which are used all through todays engines are barings which rely only on a film of oil to operate. They are usually constructed of metals like babbit, tin, aluminum, bronze and copper. They are mixed together in modern bearings to form alloys in order to get the desired properties.

When I look at bearings they ask what size, 1-4 standard. How do I determine which type I need? Thanks.

Depends on machine work. If you need to align bore the block you need a bigger OD if you need to grind the crank you need a smaller ID. If you do both processes then you need both a larger OD and smaller ID.

But if you do nothing to the engine then use standard bearing.

The engine does not need to be bored, I just need to get it honed, I do not see a standard bearing as an option on gmpartsdirect.com?

I am going for the stock rebuild, I am not sure what bearing material to use, I have a list of what they are out in my car.

I am going to use moly rings when I find them.

Ok well if you do not touch the crank journals or the mains then buy all standard stuff. If you just hone the cylinders then you can still use standard rings. Wont be a problem.

Ok that should be fine. Just measure the sizes when done and make sure you are still in spec.

Should I replace the cams, crank, and knock sensors or are they fine?

                              They should be just fine.
